State of emergency declared due to power outages

Gov. Robert Bentley has declared a state of emergency for Alabama due to widespread power outages caused by Friday's storms.

The declaration will allow crews from other states to assist in the restoration of power until Tuesday. According to Bentley's statement, about 50,000 Alabamians were left in the dark as severe weather swept through the state.

Alabama Power crews will work overnight to restore 42,000 power outages statewide, the company announced on social media. The majority of the outages are in Mobile, where 13,500 customers are without power.

Here's a breakdown showing how many customers are affected based on the company's 9 p.m. update:

  • Southern division/Montgomery area: 12,000
  • Western division: 2,500
  • Birmingham: 4,500
  • Southeast division: 5,000
