True Crime Story: Highest Crime Level in 15-Years Reported by NoHo LAPD! Following is an update on 2024 Gems from our North Hollywood LAPD “Data Mine:” • As of 2/29/2024, North Hollywood LAPD is reporting the highest Part I crime level in 15-years since LAPD crime data became publicly available beginning in 2010. • Grand Theft Auto, Reported Shoplifting Thefts, and Homicide are also at their highest levels in North Hollywood since 2010. • For 3/1/2023 – 2/29/2024, seven of eight North Hollywood LAPD Part I Crime Categories are above the 15-year NoHo average (Grand Theft Auto; Burglary; Theft; Aggravated Assault; Homicide; Rape; and Robbery), while the remaining Part I Crime Category (Burglary Theft From Vehicle) is below the 15-year NoHo average. Total Part I and Part II Crimes increased +0.9% in 2024 and are about +4% above 2019 pre-pandemic totals. NORTH HOLLYWOOD LAPD CALLS FOR SERVICE: North Hollywood LAPD logged 46,806 calls for service during the past 12-months per the “LAPD Calls for Service” dataset on the City of Los Angeles Open Data Portal. GRAND THEFT AUTO: Grand Theft Auto increased +4% in 2024 to the highest level since North Hollywood LAPD crime data became publicly available beginning in 2010. BURGLARY THEFT FROM VEHICLE: Burglary From Locked Vehicle increased +3% in 2024, while Theft From Unlocked Vehicle decreased <4%>. CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFTS: Catalytic Converter and Other Vehicle Parts Theft decreased <24%> in 2024. On a citywide basis, Catalytic Converter and Other Vehicle Parts Theft decreased <12%> in 2024. For North Hollywood LAPD, -8- Catalytic Converter and Other Vehicle Parts Thefts occurred in 9/2023; -5- in 10/2023; -7- in 11/2023; -10- in 12/2023; -8- in 1/2024; and -5- in 2/2024. RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL BURGLARIES: While Residential Burglaries increased +1% in 2024, Commercial Burglaries decreased <3%> in North Hollywood. As the overall # of Burglaries decreased slightly in North Hollywood, the % of Single and Multi-Family Residential Burglaries increased during the past two-years returning to 2019 pre-pandemic levels. SHOPLIFTING AND ALL OTHER THEFTS: Reported Shoplifting Theft increased +14% in 2024, while All Other Theft decreased <1%> in North Hollywood. • Note that -71- retail locations reported Shoplifting Theft to North Hollywood LAPD in 2022; -60- retail locations reported Shoplifting Theft to North Hollywood LAPD during the past 12-months. • In 2022, the Top -5- retail locations reported 38% of all Shoplifting Thefts in North Hollywood; During the past 12-months, the Top -5- retail locations reported 65% of all Shoplifting Thefts in North Hollywood. • Finally, -3- of the Top -5- retail locations reported -350- Shoplifting Thefts during the past 12-months. In 2022, these same -3- retail locations reported -6- Shoplifting Thefts. • This increase may be in part due to changes in corporate policies regarding reporting Shoplifting Thefts to North Hollywood LAPD with thefts underreported during the pandemic in 2020 through 2022. Also, additional stores opened at one of these retail locations in spring, 2023. BIKE THEFTS: Reported Bike Thefts in North Hollywood increased +3% in 2024. For North Hollywood LAPD, -16- Bike thefts occurred in Q1-2023; -15- Bike thefts occurred in Q2-2023; -21- Bike thefts occurred in Q3-2023; -30- Bike thefts occurred in Q4-2023; and -17- Bike thefts occurred in the past 3-months through 2/29/2024. “PORCH PIRATE” DELIVERY THEFTS: Reported “Porch Pirate” delivery thefts in North Hollywood (suspect takes UPS, FedEx, Amazon, United States Postal Service, or other delivery packages) are down <8%> in 2024. On a citywide basis, “Porch Pirate” delivery thefts are down <2%> in 2024. For North Hollywood LAPD, -43- “Porch Pirate” delivery thefts occurred in Q1-2023; -56- “Porch Pirate” delivery thefts occurred in Q2-2023; -45- “Porch Pirate” delivery thefts occurred in Q3-2023; -65- “Porch Pirate” delivery thefts occurred in Q4-2023; and -35- “Porch Pirate” delivery thefts occurred in the past 3-months through 2/29/2024. TRESPASSING AND VANDALISM CRIMES: Reported Part II Trespassing crimes increased +28% in 2024; Reported Part II Vandalism crimes decreased <2%> in 2024. On a citywide basis, Part II Trespassing crimes are up +21% in 2024. For 3/1/2023 – 2/29/2024, -324- Trespassing Part II Crimes were reported for LA Metro North Hollywood Subway Station. As comparison, -11- Trespassing Part II Crimes were reported in 2022 for North Hollywood Subway Station. For 3/1/2023 – 2/29/2024, -42- Trespassing Part II Crimes were reported for LA Metro Universal City/Studio City Subway Station. As comparison, -1- Trespassing Part II Crime was reported in 2022 for Universal City/Studio City Subway Station. REPORT THEFT CRIMES ONLINE: Some types of non-emergency crimes may be reported to North Hollywood LAPD online such as Porch Pirate, Catalytic Converter, and Bike Thefts. Also Theft; Theft From Vehicle; Lost Property; Minor Traffic Collisions; Hit and Run; and Vandalism. In 2021, over 87,000 online crime reports were completed citywide. For 2023, about 60% of Part I Property Crimes are eligible to be reported to North Hollywood LAPD online.
