Australian police say 19-year-old likely to be charged after he drove into a school building while trying to catch a creature in the popular mobile app

A man made an unplanned Pokestop when his car crashed into a Melbourne school, police have said.

Officers say the man was trying to capture a creature from the Pokémon Go mobile phone app when he lost control of his vehicle while negotiating a roundabout.

The car smashed through a fence and into a school portable building in Berwick at 6.50pm on Thursday. No one was injured.

“Any Pokeballs, eggs or potions the driver may have had remaining only attracted police,” Victoria police spokeswoman Julie-Anne Newman said.

The 19-year-old will likely be charged in relation to careless driving, police say.

Government agency VicRoads introduced almost 40 flashing road signs warning drivers “Don’t drive and Pokémon” a few days ago.

Police have warned that chasing Pokémon creatures while driving could earn a $466 fine and four demerit points.

Those hunting on foot are also warned to be aware of vehicles and other pedestrians, during the search.

The game has been downloaded more than 50m times from the Google Play store and is top of the Australian charts for free iOS apps.
