A Dallas college student nearly stabbed to death on South Padre Island during Spring Break has reached a settlement in a lawsuit.

Derek Madrigal, the college student who was stabbed, reached the settlement with the Coca-Cola Company and several other entities in a civil lawsuit.

A hearing was set for Friday morning in the 197th State District Court with the trial date set to start on Monday

Action 4 News received a copy of a letter submitted to the court by his Dallas attorney, in which he tells the court that the matter has been resolved and there is no need to proceed with the trial.

Madrigal was stabbed nine times while on Coca-Cola beach by Mexican mafia gang members. He had stepped in to defend a girl.

The then college student clung to life and had to be hospitalized for a week here before returning to Dallas.

He was forced to drop his college courses for the rest of the semester to focus on his recovery.

About a dozen gang members were convicted for the stabbing

It’s unclear how much the settlement is worth at this time, but the suit filed in March 2013 names the Coca-Cola company, Isla Grand Beach Resort and seven other companies.

Madrigal and his attorney could not be reached for comment.
