A number of North America’s largest woodworking manufacturers continue to thrive despite the challenges of the pandemic, and the numbers revealed by this year’s FDMC 300 bear that out. As a group, 2021 sales for the FDMC 300 – which includes manufacturers of cabinetry, furniture, millwork, fixtures, closets and casework – grew 7.9 percent over the previous year, reaching the highest level yet, roughly $62.4 billion.
Overall, companies catering to the residential market did better than those focused on the commercial sector, which continued to get hammered by COVID-mandated closures of stores, restaurants, offices and other public buildings. In 2020 we saw some companies, notably office furniture manufacturers, pivoting to the work-from-home market, and that trend continued throughout 2021, highlighted at the recent NeoCon.
Ongoing supply chain issues also impacted a large number of firms across the board throughout 2021, particularly in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, there’s no crystal ball to indicate when this will be resolved.
That said, a large number of FDMC 300 respondents already are projecting much higher sales for 2022, including those involved in retail fixtures, architectural woodwork and contract furnishings. An in-depth look at some of the market segments will be included in upcoming issues of FDMC magazine.
About the FDMC 300
The FDMC 300 is the woodworking industry’s oldest recognized ranking of the largest North American producers of furniture, cabinetry, architectural millwork, windows/doors, retail fixtures, home organization and other wood-related products. This year marks the 36th annual report.
Companies are ranked based on sales figures. Due to the fact information is solicited prior to the fiscal year end for many companies, the number provided is marked as an estimate. In some cases, the information listed may be based on our own research or from recognized sources such as Dun & Bradstreet, and will also be indicated as an estimate. Companies were contacted multiple times via email and phone for up-to-date information.
