Mental Health America is thrilled to share a new FAQ on peer support services published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This guidance to states clarifies supervision issues and encourages rates that support a living wage for peer specialists. It also highlights youth peer specialists and the need to meet young people with more access to peer support. We applaud Administrator Daniel Tsai and his team at Medicaid and the Center for Medicaid & CHIP Services for working with SAMHSA leadership and other stakeholders, including MHA and its partners, to promote recovery-oriented peer support services as part of a full continuum of care for mental health and substance use conditions. Communities that offer peer services typically collaborate with peer-run organizations, like many of MHA affiliates, and we hope states will work with our affiliate field and other community-based organizations to roll out more peer services in schools and other settings. June is Men’s Mental Health Month. According to SAMSHA, nearly 20% of American adult men (that’s around 24.6 million people) experienced a mental health condition over the last year. But because of the stigma around men’s mental health, many men resist seeking treatment. Let’s shift the conversation around men’s mental health this and every month. Remember: asking for help with your mental health isn’t a sign of weakness - it’s a sign of strength. You are not alone. ❤️ Take the first step with a free, confidential mental health screening at screening.mhanational.org
