Moore medal by the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) America for remarkable contributions to both market impact and then improvement of quality of life. This honor recognizes her outstanding early-career achievements in innovation, particularly in the development of the Tetrashield™ protective resin system, which has led to the commercialization of over 10 products addressing health and food safety concerns with BPA in food contact applications. Eastman had the honor of sponsoring the first "Del Suelo a la Mesa" congress in Almería, Spain, organized by COEXPHAL. This event emphasized the critical importance of soil and the essential role of soil care management in the future of the agri-food sector. Experts gathered to discuss the latest innovations and regulatory trends in this field. We explored significant topics, including the necessity of proper soil disinfection using only registered products that effectively control soil parasites while respecting the environment and biodiversity. Cody Day, an Eastman maintenance planner from Limestone, Tennessee, has several family members who lost their homes to Hurricane Helene. He immediately volunteered with many others to open roads and reach people, working from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. the first two weeks. “I said I was helping with flood relief and my manager texted back that I should do whatever I need to do,” Day said. “And that says a lot about Eastman.” Despite the overwhelming outpouring of volunteers, much work remains. “This isn’t just something that happened in September and things are back to normal,” Day said. “This recovery is going to take years. People will need help for a long time.” Day even helped start a nonprofit that originally provided things needed in the immediate aftermath of the flood, such as food, clothing and cleaning supplies. Six months after Hurricane Helene, Eastman team members are still helping out. In the immediate aftermath, the company partnered with local businesses and vendors to help meet critical needs, organized donation drives, created channels for team members to stay informed about ongoing relief initiatives, and supported volunteerism, sharing safety resources and information for team members who wanted to help. The work continues. “This is a company with a lot of big hearts,” said Paula Bulcao, director of global public and community affairs. “That’s something we see every day. After days of cutting trails, backpacking in supplies and doing anything he could to help mountain residents cut off from the outside world after Hurricane Helene last September, Josh Callahan was exhausted. When he pulled into the parking lot for work at Eastman’s Kingsport, Tennessee, manufacturing site, he broke down. All he could think of was relatives without power or access to water. They desperately needed gasoline for generators to power their well pumps. “My plan was to buy every gas jug I could find, fill them and take them to my family,” Callahan said. After he explained the situation, Eastman team members put together a convoy of trucks full of water, clothes, food and 300 gallons of fuel to take over the mountains to Burnsville, N.C. Congratulations to Eastman Senior Fellow Bruce DeBruin, winner of the prestigious Society of Chemical Industry Perkin Medal! The Perkin Medal recognizes the highest honor in American industrial chemistry. A southeastern Ohio native, Bruce is being recognized for innovation in applied chemistry and engineering. His work resulted in outstanding commercial development of plastic waste recycling processes, now being used at the worlds’ largest molecular recycling facility, located at Eastman’s Kingsport, TN headquarters. “Inventing something pragmatic that can actually be used by the company is both an art and a science,” DeBruin said. “I come up with different ways of doing things that have never been done before, then work with hundreds of people to turn it into a physical reality. Being recognized for that is an honor."
