AED Stablecoin's preliminary approval provides clarity on crypto payment regulations after concerns emerged regarding restrictions in the CBUAE’s latest licensing framework. The framework only permits licensed dirham-pegged tokens for payments, while prohibiting algorithmic stablecoins and privacy tokens. If fully approved, AE Coin—the stablecoin issued by AED Stablecoin—could act as a local trading pair for cryptocurrencies on both exchanges and decentralized platforms, while also enabling merchants to accept it for goods and services. Stablecoin Issuance Requirements: The CBUAE’s framework mandates that issuers must: Fully back stablecoins with cash held in escrow in UAE banks, or Hold at least 50% of reserve assets in cash, with the remainder invested in UAE government bonds or CBUAE Monetary Bills with a maturity of up to six months. Now at $13.5bn AuM with a successful launch in a hostile regulatory environment - they have proven they have the #assetManagement firepower and top-level influence to make it happen. Currently there are no locally operating #crypto exchanges and #KSA #banks are banned from dealing in the asset in the #GCC's biggest economy. Despite these frictions, #saudiArabia was the fasting growing country globally for crypto in 22/23. According to data from Chainalysis the locals executed over ~$30bn of transactions (most via Switzerland and Bahrain apparently). Better to regulate onshore Vs pushing offshore no? Is something coming in 24/25? Thus far the banking regulator Saudi Central Bank – SAMA has been shown to be pro #Blockchain for interbank and wholesale #cbdcs but anti retail crypto. The Saudi Capital Markets Authority is anecdotally less hostile and listed ETFs would fall under their domain. Given BlackRock's success in launching the fastest $1bn AUM in history in a hostile regulatory environment - they are perfect for the job and the opportunity is easy and sizable. #Saudi maybe late to the #digitalAssets game, but beyond #bitcoin they are rich in Physical World Assets (PWAs) like commodities that are ripe for #Tokenization. When they move into the space - the the MENA region will feel it.
