HuH places pressure to the palm of the hand, NOT around the top of the hand, sides, or base of the digit, thus protecting both people from injury.
Benefits of Hand-under-Hand® (HuH)
- Lets the person maintain a feeling of control and independence
- Utilizes remaining muscle memory to help the brain process the situation
- Reduces resistant behaviors
- Increases meal intake
HuH modulates the activation of the hypothalamus, the gland that controls, among other functions, the stress response (Coan, Schaefer, & Davidson, 2006). Using HuH with a person living with dementia can offer comfort and initiate activity. It also enables care partners to better assist with activities of daily living, such as eating, drinking, or personal care.
Compared to the commonly used direct hand or hand over hand approaches, HuH elicits the least amount of resistive responses while giving the person living with dementia a greater sense of participation in their daily care (Baranoski, 2005; Barry, McConnell, Duea, & Blodgett, 2022; Batchelor-Murphy, 2015; Batchelor-Murphy, Amella, Zapka, Mueller, & Beck, 2015; Batchelor-Aselage, Amella, Rose, & Bales, 2015; Batchelor-Murphy, McConnell, Amella, Anderson, Bales, Silva, Barnes, Beck, & Colon-Emeric, 2017; Battersby, 2009; Beldon, 2006; Groom et al. 2010).

The Positive Physical Approach™ (PPA) is a 6-9 step method used to approach and connect with a person living with dementia, resulting in a reduced chance of agitation and greater mutual understanding and comfort.
PPA was developed based on the knowledge that a person living with dementia experiences their environment differently than a person with a healthy brain.
PPA is a dynamic assessment of the other person’s willingness, comfort, and ability to engage and interact. PPA uses as many retained skills as possible in order to do with, not to when caring for someone living with dementia.
Care Partners, therefore, learn how to change their own actions accordingly, and how to use this improved personal connection to encourage participation in various care tasks or situations.
Benefits of the Positive Physical Approach® (PPA)
- Establishes a mutually welcoming connection
- Reduces the risk of surprising and agitating the person living with dementia
- Opens opportunities for continued connection for easier task completion
- Functions as a dynamic assessment of the other person's willingess, comfort, and ability to interact, reducing your risk of surprising negative reactions

Positive Personal Connections (PPC), an approach developed by Teepa Snow, are five phrases that help care partners connect with the person living with dementia before jumping into the task.
By putting the relationship first, interactions are more likely to result in positive outcomes.
Positive Action Starters (PAS), an approach developed by Teepa Snow, are five phrases that help care partners receive less resistance and refusals when getting started with a care task.
Benefits of Positive Personal Connections (PPC) and Positive Action Starters (PAS)
- Establishes a genuine connection with the person living with dementia
- Puts the relationship front and center, strengthening your bond and reducing agitation
- Helps the person feel seen and respected instead as a task to get done
