Happy mental health awareness month! I haven't talked about it (or anything, to be honest) much publicly, but the past year has been the hardest one I've had in terms of managing my mental health. It's been incredibly challenging and I'm so grateful for my support system and the mental health resources I've been able to utilize to get through it. I'm grateful for the grace that's been given to me while I've been far from my best and for those who tell me, day after day, that it will get better. If you're struggling-know that you're not alone and it's okay not to be okay. While the things to make yourself feel better seem simple (find your people, take your meds, move your body, etc.), they are hard. Celebrate the little victories and remember that when you look back, you'll see that even the smallest ones add up. Even if it's difficult-please ask for help. And on the flip side-offer help and support if you see someone that needs it. The construction industry has a 4 times higher than average rate of suicide, which is why the US Department of Health and Human Services detailing a concrete* plan for lowering the rate of suicide is so important. *pun intended

Almost a Million. When CMHA BC shared the overwhelming data on mental health crises in our province, we knew we had to find a way to make those numbers hit home. That's how the concept of "Almost a Million" was born. Instead of just sharing statistics, we created relatable stories—comparing the number of people impacted by mental illness to sold-out Canucks games, schoolchildren, and local town populations. Our creative strategy transformed cold data into something deeply human and familiar. At Cause+Affect, we specialize in simplifying and humanizing complex societal issues to increase understanding and inspire change. We're tackling the stigmas that prevent us from building more connected, compassionate communities. According to CDC data from 2021, the suicide rate for Native men and women is the highest of any of the racial or ethnic groups. In 2023, it was the 8th leading cause of death. At #NIHB, we are advocating for a national suicide prevention strategy that is relevant to Tribes, properly funded, and has adequate systems and structures in place to keep our communities safe. Why not take the time today to reach out to someone in your community, a family member, a friend, colleague or even a stranger to see how they are doing? Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and this year the International Association for Suicide Prevention is issuing a call to action: ‘Start the Conversation’. Because every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a more supportive and understanding society. By initiating these vital conversations, we can break down barriers, raise awareness and inspire others to seek help and to know they are not alone. Earlier research from Ten to Men, AIFS’ longitudinal study on male health, demonstrated a link between a low level of social connection and suicidality. A subsequent report focused on social connectedness in Australian males found that social connectedness plays a vital role in maintaining mental health, as well as a range of positive personal and community outcomes.
