let’s talk about merch for a minute -okay maybe 2: i’ll start with a story: i was wearing this white Ketchup t-shirt last saturday during a 5k run in Golden Gate Park. Julian Weisser might have been the first -definitely not the last- to come and ask me how much i like Ketchup. later on while we were getting our morning coffee at Flywheel Coffee Roasters someone came and asked me if i was also working at Kraft Heinz. that’s when i saw his sweatshirt -Ketchup related of course- and we all had a good laugh and started talking. first question from him being: 'where did you get this?' since it’s coming from my favorite burger spot in France, it led us to talk about Lyon, the food scene, SF and so on. design wise: THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT GOOD MERCH SHOULD BE. discussion starters. if i wear some merch, i’m using my body to tell the rest of the world what i’m into. we often read about human-tech new interfaces but let me remind you something: clothing is a damn great interface between our body/ skin and the ‘outside world’ for a little while. now, if you’re about to make some merch. please, PLEASE, make it great. what do you think you’re telling the world when the quality of your product is shit? when you have no idea where it’s coming from? how it’s been made? if you’re treating merch like soulless disposable stuff, you’re a disposable business. period. so be thoughtful, be intentional. why do you want to make merch in the first place? be creative. if you don’t have the budget and/ or don’t think your people would buy a $60 t-shirt, that’s totally fine, make something that’s way cheaper -could be a pin or stickers- but make it insanely great. and use it to tell a story, show your values and create human connections. at the end of the day, it’s all about connections. CONNECTION to your brand, CONNECTION to the people behind the product itself, CONNECTION to other fans. when done great, it provides MEANING.

We've all likely experienced our favorite food or beverage items "evolving" over the years. Rather it be different packaging, different ingredients which lead to different tastes, or even the item being discontinued. With so many big corporate takeovers of smaller brands and their endless quest to drive profits, this is all too commonplace in the #foodandbeverage space. Here's a feel-good story about someone who liked a brand so much, he decided to buy it and bring it back to life, and has seen success in doing so. #snacks #cpg #candy #confectionery #3pls #logistics #warehousing

https://lnkd.in/dDt-AZem If it ain't broke, don't fix it... Yet sometimes reinventing the wheel is the best decision for an organisation. A paradox you say and I agree. Indulge me a bit Yellow, blue and red wrapper with a chip monk and "Did you know? facts in the inside of the wrapper. More than 50 years after that strategy, it it's still a stand out feature of Chappies. Don't fix it. Consumers are smart and prefer to have options, Chappies took note of this. the design of the original Yellow wrapper still remains but the colors or the "newer wrappers also indicates the flavor of the gum and still has the "Did you know?" facts on the inside. simple yet brilliant and spaza shops still give a Chappies in lieu of 50 cents change. #IfItAintBrokeDontFixIt #ReinventingTheWheelAlsoGeneratesRevenue #CheriYaKasiEBlindKaComms

Bad packaging might be hurting your sales.... 💰 Here's how: I've been seeing this #Nutriboat product almost every week while doing my weekly grocery shopping. But it took me a long time to finally decide to buy it. That's because the #packaging didn't feel attractive at all.... 😅 I finally bought it when I ran out of new things to try. And the product ended up tasting good.... 😋 But most people don't see your product multiple times and finally buy it. Most people don't find it attractive once and never think about giving it a shot. Besides the bad choice of #typeface, it lacks contrast and hierarchy. It's very difficult to read half of the information on the pack and that's bad for business.... 😌 Can you read everything on this #packagingdesign...? 🤓 #branding #branddesign #branddesigner #brandconsultant

👻 A scary email turned up in my inbox this morning... BrewDog telling me they had "Beers worth Goblin" 👺 🪦 Asking me not to make a "Grave Mistake", Brewdog demonstrate the power of #Limited_Edition and the role that a great Direct-to-Consumer (#D2C) strategy can play for businesses. ⏱️ Delivered straight to my inbox creates an air of exclusivity and limited availability... encouraging me to participate with urgency.. I'm clicking and proceeding... looking beyond the cool design this limited edition design has a +136% premium vs 4 cans in a multi-pack at Tesco!! Same liquid, different jacket.... ELEVATED BRAND VALUE... Going direct gives BrewDog enthusiasts a chance to reconnect with the #brand and to reinforce the #premium they are prepared to pay... Who knows, in light of recent announcements; do this often enough and this might even be a way for BrewDog to recover their losses??? QUESTION - Who in my #beer-peer group would be prepared to pay for the elevated status of drinking #Halloween beer in super cool cans? For my #ecommerce community is this an excellent example of the D2C value-add proposition or something more ghoulish? i.e. you don't like it? And did I buy it? I'll update you in a later post! #ecom #craftbeer

Have you heard of the brand Grillo's Pickles? 🥒 They are a Boston-based pickle company founded in 2008 whose pickles are made from a 100-year-old family recipe. In April of this year, Grillo’s announced their plans to roll out new packaging that includes a twist top lid to help stop leaks and spillage—the most common complaint with the previous packaging. With Grillo’s original packaging, consumers had to break off a plastic tab before opening the lid, leading to frequent spills and issues the brand was well aware of. 🥒 In the announcement post, Grillo’s stated: "We know you all love the signature 💦 when opening up one of our jars, but soon that will be a thing of the past. After years of hearing you out, we are finally going to have a TWIST TOP lid that will be easier to open and close with no spills or leaks." Read more on the new Grillo’s packaging along with consumer stories of the old packaging here: https://bit.ly/3UWalQm #pickles #foodpackaging #packagingdesign #packaginginnovation

It’s interesting how products/objects can take on so much emotional value in our lives… This bottle of Conker Coffee Liqueur was behind the bar at mine and my wife's wedding a few years back. It was the one brand/booze we both requested to have stocked - I’ve always loved the packaging and who doesn’t want the coffee and alcohol combo? We finished the bottle and the venue gave it to us the next day as a keepsake. Since then it’s moved around the house but is always displayed and used as a kind of link to the day for us. This is in part because the style of the label/bottle fits so well into our home. I think a lot of people can relate to this, especially when it comes to food/beverage brands. I’ve known people to keep corks, collect coffee bags, biscuit tins etc. Or is it just me? 😂 #alcholbranding #brandidentity #packagingdesign #coffeebranding #coffeepackaging #alcholbrands #designagency #designstudio #packagingdesign
