The Kings Church Food Bank is a welcoming, community-centered space designed to offer much more than just food. While traditional food banks might evoke images of long lines and impersonal service, this one seems to create a supportive and respectful environment for its clients. Here’s a breakdown of what the experience at Kings Church Food Bank seems to look like: Welcoming Atmosphere: When clients arrive, they’re greeted by the friendly Hope Portsmouth Team, ensuring that the experience is warm and inviting from the very start. Comfortable Waiting Area: Instead of waiting in a stark, impersonal line, clients receive a numbered ticket at reception and are then invited into a room where they can relax with a free cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. This helps create a more dignified and relaxed experience. Community and Support: While waiting, clients can interact with staff from various support services, like Citizens Advice Portsmouth, and learn about other programs under Hope Portsmouth like the ROC+COACH Community Mentoring Programme, Circle of Support, and more. These services offer broader support beyond just food. Donations and Swap Table: Clients have access to a box of donations where they can pick up up to three items. They can also swap items from their food parcels on the swap table, giving them more agency and control over what they receive. Child-Friendly and Confidential Areas: For families, there’s a designated child-friendly space, making it easier for parents to focus on their own needs while children are entertained. Confidential areas are also available for those who may want to discuss sensitive matters privately. Additional Resources: In addition to food, the food bank also offers hygiene and household items (subject to availability). Clients can request referrals to the Portsmouth Baby Bank and access support for specific needs like bathroom products and cleaning supplies. A Calming Environment: Throughout the space, there’s music playing, and the overall environment is calm, warm, and welcoming. This goes beyond the typical food bank experience, where the focus is on providing not just physical sustenance, but emotional support and a sense of community. The Kings Church Food Bank is a well-rounded, compassionate service that sees its clients as more than just recipients of food. It provides a nurturing environment where people can access a wide range of resources and feel valued, supported, and heard. #Portsmouthfoodbanks #HopePortsmouth #Citizensadviceportsmouth #charitablesupport #foodbanks #KingsChurchPortsmouth #citizensadvicesolenteast #survivingwinter #foodbanks #helpwithfood

Sometimes even the most impactful initiatives face insurmountable challenges. Dave Letele's decision to close BBM FoodShare is a sobering reminder of the ongoing struggle many communities face. His work has touched countless lives, providing essential support to up to 1000 families weekly. The closure of this vital service highlights the pressing need for sustainable funding models in community support programs. He (and the families) need your support -> https://lnkd.in/gBaWSy3 While one chapter ends, Dave's commitment to uplifting his community through health, education, and empowerment programs continues. His transparency about this difficult decision sheds light on the immense pressure faced by community leaders and organisations. Let's reflect on how we can better support these crucial initiatives. Can we create more sustainable models? How can we ensure that those most in need don't fall through the cracks? Dave's resilience is inspiring. As he says, 'Surely there must be a way to continue?' Perhaps this is a call for all of us to step up and find innovative solutions to support our communities. What a day. I just got back to Auckland and I’m about to eat a kebab knowing I’ll feel worse after. 🤦🏽♂️ I feel like a bit of a failure on this. Surely there must be a way to continue? This decision was not made lightly but we are simply unable to sustain the costs of running it. Thank you to all the organisations, funders and donors that have contributed to the Foodshare. Thank you to all our incredible staff and volunteers who have served our community through the FoodShare. FoodShare operations will be slowing down towards Christmas before shutting down. BBM will continue to give our people a hand-up through health, education and empowerment programs. Thank you to Imogen and the team Stuff, and all the media for covering today. Today, I am excited to share that DoorDash’s Project DASH is celebrating 100 million charitable meals delivered in partnership with food pantries, food banks, and community organizations. As people experiencing food insecurity grapple with transportation and time challenges, local delivery breaks down these barriers and connects them with the resources they need. These 100 million meals delivered include: - More than 63 million meals delivered to areas with a higher rate of SNAP-receiving households than the national average; - More than 12 million meals delivered to food deserts and about 15 million meals to rural communities; - More than 34 million meals delivered to areas with a higher rate of seniors than the national average; and - More than 49 million meals delivered to areas with a higher rate of people with disabilities than the national average. https://lnkd.in/dpTRZr-y

We have a story in the latest issue of Neighbourhood Media detailing all the work we do via Addison Road Food Pantry Camperdown, our low-cost grocery store which makes use of rescued, donated and purchased food to support the local community and its needs. The story (link below) shows how we help feed people from Mission Australia's Common Ground housing project and the nearby Johanna O’Dea Court, a multi-storey NSW Family and Community Services apartment block. It also explains how we serve people living on a tight budget in Camperdown and Glebe, as well as people who come to the pantry from right across the City of Sydney LGA. Most of all, the story is a celebration of our monthly Addi Road 'Let's Get Cooking' sessions (AKA "the Cook-Up"), which offers 260 free hot meals for Mission Australia and Joanna O'Dea residents, as well as those shopping at our Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown. These sessions involve a monthly cooking demo inside the Common Ground building. Food literacy is the ultimate goal behind Addi Road's Let's Get Cooking program. As well as simply providing a free hot meal (and dessert) each month, we look at helping people to shop AND cook with often very limited funds. Each month there are easy recipes on offer (and ready to be tasted) along extra tips for stocking people's kitchen cupboards; a list of essentials to facilitate simple, inexpensive and nutritious recipes that will match whatever Addi Road Food Pantry might have in stock. It's about building an integrated food ecology for people battling. With a few extra special ingredients over a shared meal as the community comes together: camaraderie and connection. + #Addiroad #cityofsydney #foodrelief #foodjustice #housing #inequality #Camperdown #Glebe #MissionAustralia #homeless #battling #costofliving #poverty #resilience #mentalhealth #wellbeing #nutrition #diet #charity #community #freemeals #cookingworkshop #volunteers #caring #education #connection #letsgetcooking #neighbourhoodmedia https://lnkd.in/gs7vVEvM

Chef Kwame Onwuachi's "Notes From a Young Black Chef" is a masterclass in starting without permission! Here's a story that resonated with me: 👨🏾🍳 He cooked up his success story (pun intended ) with #problemsolving and a "why." 💡 His "why?" Ensuring people felt cared for through his food! He didn't have a culinary arts degree but knew he could make people feel cared for with the experience he provided with his food. So what did he do? He started a catering business. He sold candy on NYC trains to raise funds for material - and always kept an ear out for an opportunity to secure a catering gig. He landed his first catering job- by offering his help to a fellow new small business owner he met by walking into her store. As his business grew, he became curious about the science behind food. A few months later, he enrolled in a culinary program. To fund his education, he continued working weekends as a caterer! These steps- taking the leap to start his business and building on skills as he grew- enabled him to become a Top Chef. 💡 I found it inspiring to read about how Chef Kwame overcame a hurdle I struggle with—starting! I have a constant loop about not knowing enough; the truth is that the only way I'll truly know (and break out of the loop) is by doing. I was reminded to start somewhere, anywhere—with a strong why and effort! 📝 What's your 'why' that keeps you going? Let's chat in the comments! #Laasthoughts #skilldevelopment #promotion #careerpivot #justdoit #lifelonglearning

A few things I've become more grateful for from having volunteered at a local food bank. 1). Having a can opener is a luxury. 2). Being able to keep foods cold or heat up meals makes meal prep so much easier. 3). Salt, pepper and condiments can take your meals to the next level. 4.) Automobiles are not the best place to get a good night's rest. Summary: Wealth is not based on having the most, it's all about needing the least.

Do You Contribute That KFC R2 Or You Can Explain Or You Would Rather Sing The Chinese Song? I do, sometimes contribute, well not much, but I can explain. I will also sing the (sad?) Chinese song, the video of which became the soundtrack to this attached video. And it's not because I do not want to donate, it is because I am not clear on where the money actually goes. The skeptical accountant in me lowkey thinks that KFC is padding it's margins. I also heard a story that KFC customer facing employees have targets for these R2 contributions and if they do not meet them, there are negative consequences. Not sure how true this is. All I know is that some look down upon you on some "how stingy are you that you cannot add an extra R2 on your order?" Apparently, "This two rand goes towards feeding a child. It's a small amount, but it makes a big difference to a hungry little one. Through more than 100 beneficiaries, we feed over 113,000 kids every day. With the help of ordinary South Africans, Add Hope has raised R321 million over the past seven years." So hear me out. Apparently South Africa has the 5th largest number of KFC stores in the world at 1 052, behind China (9,917), United States (3,890) Japan (1,210), Thailand (1,053) and ahead of UK (1001) Really? "I never esperredit"! The fried chicken giant is also the most popular fast-food brand in the country, with 10 million South Africans eating there at least once in the past four weeks, according to a study by Eighty20. So, there are "at least" about "10 million" transactions per month done by South Africans. I would assume that the average KFC fan buys it more than once a month🤔. But, let us assume that 50% of these customers agree to pay R2 with each transaction, then 10 000 000 x 1 time per month x 50% x R2 X 12 = R120 million per year. Either way, since the contribution has always been R2 per transaction regardless of year, food price inflation or size of purchase, even at a minimum KFC has made more than R321 million in 7 years. Is my math mathing or have I made an egregious mistake in assuming KFC takes in this much? If KFC donates this to worthy causes, as opposed to silently adding it to their margin as I suspect, then I salute them. We are not ungrateful KFC, even though it is OUR money! They need to come up with a better explanation, or a better public relations strategy so we know ukuthi kwenzekalani lapho. Maybe it's just me but I have not seen R120 million per year (or R840 million over 7 years?) from KFC going to orphans. Ok, let me stop being an inquisitive "clever black", with neither a KFC franchise nor shares in the owner Yum Brands, and rather let me sing my Chinese song of woe (?) as per video🗣. I wonder if this R2 is global practice? Do they do this in China too, in UK?🤔 Actually, that said, let me go and get a "streetwise 3 and pap" minus that awful soup of theirs, and without adding that R2 on top. I have issues ne?🤣 #corporatesocialresponsibility #impact
