2023 Best Places to Work: Announcing the DEI Top Scoring Companies
Disability:IN proudly announces the 2023 Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion.
The Disability Equality Index (DEI), a joint initiative with the American Association of People with Disabilities, is a comprehensive benchmarking tool that helps companies build a roadmap of measurable, tangible actions toward disability inclusion and equality. Each company receives a score, on a scale of zero (0) to 100, with those earning 80 and above recognized as “Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion”.
In 2023, 485 companies participated in the DEI, illuminating intriguing insights from this year's benchmark, including:
- Diversity of DEI Participation: There is an increased range and variation among organizations participating in the DEI with 30 industry sectors represented; more than 70% of Fortune 100 companies and nearly half of the Fortune 500 are now leveraging the benchmark.
- Board-Level Representation: In 2023, board-level representation of people with disabilities remains a limited practice that has only been adopted by 7% of participating companies.
- Building Inclusive Cultures Worldwide: The two-year Global Disability Equality Index (Global DEI) pilot, spanning 98 companies across 66 countries, identified three key components for a disability-inclusive culture: in-country executives who identify as a person with a disability or a strong ally, C-suite support, and a disability-focused Employee Resource Group that has been active for two years or more.

The DEI is a joint initiative of the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), the nation’s largest disability rights organization, and Disability:IN, the global business disability inclusion network, to collectively advance the inclusion of people with disabilities. The organizations are complementary and bring unique strengths that make the project relevant and credible to corporations and the disability community. 1yI appreciate all the hard work that these companies and DEI put into the process of being selected for this elite group of companies. HOWEVER, It's not good enough. Over 5 million people with disabilities remain unemployed. I would like to see the numbers year over year of how many people with disabilities are getting jobs and keeping them as if they had a career. Instead of counting the companies, I'd like to know if DEI has any numbers on real people in careers. Counting companies is needed, but it doesn't give me a feeling that progress is being made. I would be glad to talk about how we represent numbers. Message me, and we can brainstorm some other ideas.
