'We are here to help': Second Harvest sends disaster relief packs following Hurricane Helene
After Hurricane Helene, tens of thousands of people still need essentials like food and water.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is sending immediate relief to the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Helene.
Crews are working around the clock to support hunger relief efforts.
A truck picked up 500 Abbott disaster relief packs from Second Harvest and those are being transported to Second Harvest of the Big Bend.
"When you can’t feed your family almost everything stops until you get some hands on some food," said Greg Higgerson, Chief Development Officer for Second Harvest.
Each box is designed to meet a family’s immediate nutritional needs for three days and does not require warming or refrigeration. The packs contain Abbott nutrition products, such as nutritional bars, Ensure and PediaSure nutrition drinks for adults and children, and Pedialyte rehydration solutions.
An additional 500 packs were sent to Feeding Tampa Bay along with MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) that are being directed to hunger relief efforts in Georgia.
Higgerson says the global healthcare company Abbott and Feeding America partner at the start of hurricane season each year to store “disaster relief packs” with donated Abbott nutrition products.
These packs are now being distributed to affected communities, providing a first wave of immediate relief following Hurricane Helene.
"Folks who are in the remote areas are cleaning up and trying to recover. Those are physical days for those people, it takes fuel, nutrition and calories," said Higgerson.
Higgerson says they will continue to send out supplies as long as they are needed.
