Now that we’ve reached the middle of April, I wanted to share a reminder about Walmart’s 11th annual “Fight Hunger, Spark Change” campaign, which continues through the end of the month. This campaign sees Walmart working alongside customers, members, and suppliers to benefit food banks in communities around the country – food insecurity is something many Americans face every day, and this program can help! There are three easy ways for customers and members to participate during the campaign: Purchase FHSC participating products in-store or online*: 1 item purchased at Walmart = 1 meal secured on behalf of a local Feeding America food bank  1 item purchased at Sam’s Club= 5 meals secured on behalf of a local Feeding America food bank.  Donate at check-out in any Walmart store, Sam’s Club or when shopping on Walmart.com or the Walmart app and support the local Feeding America food bank.  Donate online at https://lnkd.in/g7cEjb7k    Please consider donating to a cause that makes such a difference for people in need across the U.S. #TeamWalmart #FightHungerSparkChange 

Burgess Hill Pantry provides residents in the RH15, RH16 and BN6 postcodes with a long-term solution to food poverty,  offering them an experience as close to empowered supermarket shopping as possible. Each week, for £4, they choose 10 or more fresh, frozen or pantry items (with an average basket value of between £15 and £20), saving money, preventing food waste and providing affordable healthy foods. Demand has escalated over the two years we have been open and now have over 180 members shopping for over 500 adults and children and a waiting list of 60. Our stock comes from a number of sources,  donations from individuals, charities (such as Fareshare  His Church, local food banks) and retailers such as Consort, Lidl, Waitrose & Partners, Marks and Spencer and Tesco who donate stock that otherwise would be destined for landfill. Local businesses also support in the form of monthly shops and donations of money. We also  purchase items to ensure that our members have a good range of items to choose from and currently this is costing £1.250 per month. We need more help and we are looking for businesses to help us secure our future.  We will soon be required to find new premises and would like to reduce our waiting list and broaden our offering. In order to do this we need to increase our annual income substantially. The Tarrant Area Food Bank was founded in 1982 by a group of Fort Worth residents concerned about hunger in their community. It is now the primary source of donated food for hunger-relief charities and feeding programs in Tarrant and 12 surrounding counties, serving 1,000,000 meals each week. The MW Cares Foundation formed a partnership several years ago with The Tarrant Area Food Bank to assist with the food insecurity needs that exist in our communities. Our ability to contribute is in part due to the business our customers entrust to us. A few we would like to thank to this time include The Clorox Company, Armada, Walmart and Target. As a member of the Blackmores Sustainability Committee (& resident hippie!) it is important we are continually driving to align our actions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Congress Passes the Food Donation Improvement Act Congress successfully passed legislation, known as the Food Donation Improvement Act, that will curb food waste while reducing food insecurity. Businesses frequently dispose of safe, healthy food out of fear that they will be held liable should a donated product make someone ill. The Food Donation Improvement Act will expand protections for manufacturers, retailers, farmers, and restaurants to encourage donations. Today is World Food Day. We can all relate to this - we all need to eat. Food is also top of mind for us all, especially with the ever-rising prices. Food insecurity is now in our vernacular. We've been great at helping for decades. But the problem of food inequity is only getting bigger. So before you throw money at charity and think you are done, ask questions! Why does this problem persist? How is your dollar being used? How are 'industry thought leaders' moving the needle? What can we all do together - individuals, charities, businesses? Food for thought.
