In our 2023 Annual Report, we take a look at trends at FISH over the past few years, particularly comparing pre-pandemic numbers to today. What we are seeing is continued growth in need, as the high cost of living paired with fewer support resources adds more and more strain for families. One area in which we have seen considerable increases is the pounds of food we distribute each year. In 2023, FISH distributed 1,560,603 pounds of food, more than any other year in our history as an organization. Our marketplace could not run without the generous support of our community. We source food from four main sources: donations from our Broomfield grocery stores and restaurant partners, Community Food Share, in-kind donations from our neighbors (which includes food drives!), and purchased food made possible by our incredible donors and by grant funding. All of these support networks allow us to stock a variety of food and personal care items for our families so they can shop for what their families need. No one should have to choose between feeding their families and other basic necessities. Organizations such as those gathered at the Capitol today fulfill a vital role in our community: ensuring that all people have access to fresh, healthy food. Thanks to their tireless efforts, we can work towards a Wisconsin where no one goes hungry. Ensuring that everyone has the ability to feed their families should be a top priority in our state. That is why it is essential that we provide food pantries and other food service organizations with the necessary resources to carry out their essential mission. As demand for their services increases, so should our support of their efforts. The time is now to act in alignment with our values. It is not enough to say that all people deserve to have food on the table – we need to ensure that food makes it there. That is why I am proud to stand beside each and every one of these vital organizations and uplift their call for additional funding and resources so they can continue to serve our communities. Only by working together can we create a more fair and equitable Wisconsin where everyone has what they need to grow and thrive.

We help many kinds of retailers and CPGs optimize their supply chains, but spoilage is unique to those operating in the food industry. What does your company do for your team?

  With the warmer weather, is your organization prepared to keep cold food cold?  Food safety is serious business – make sure your nonprofit is prepared to keep your volunteer’s food safe. Volunteers from Safety for NonProfits Inc. and ABSA International have developed a Food Safety Toolkit for non-profit organizations that have volunteers serving in roles that include the preparation and serving of food as well as distribution of food in the community. The resources within the toolkit can also benefit non-profit organizations without a food-centered mission, including those that host potlucks, shared meals or events with food. Non-profits are encouraged to reach out to S4NP to locate a volunteer who can provide additional support such as an on-site review of the non-profit’s food service program or assistance with utilizing the Toolkit resources. This #HungerActionMonth, Dairy West is excited to announce our collaboration with Tackle Hunger to combat food insecurity across the nation. During this crucial month and throughout the year, we are committed to ensuring that essential dairy foods are within everyone’s reach. Milk, cheese and yogurt, while highly demanded, are seldom donated to food charities because they need refrigeration. Through our partnership with Tackle Hunger and their innovative donation map, you can help change this by making monetary donations directly to local food charities. These contributions will provide nutrient-rich dairy to those in dire need. This initiative spans 21 states, where regional dairy councils work tirelessly to ensure that donations reach our communities effectively. We are honored to work with just a few of those nonprofits who are addressing a wide range of challenges such as: ✔distributing meals to those in need ✔advocating for systemic food policy changes ✔promoting sustainable agriculture, and ✔increasing access to nutritious, affordable groceries in food deserts Some food for thought for fundraising in grassroots food organizations: 🥑 Build upon your in-kind donations - celebrate the donations of food and other non-monetary items you receive; list them in your grant budgets and talk about them in your conversations with donors. 🥞 Tell an asset-based story - focus on the strengths and aspirations of the community you serve, and tell a story of hope and possibility. 🥙 Highlight your extensive partnerships - food-based organizations are often so good at collaborating. Feed Needs is a charitable initiative by Lean6SigAgile dedicated to addressing food insecurity by providing safe, nutritious food to underserved communities. Through partnerships with food banks, local farms, and community organizations, Feed Needs sources and distributes essential food resources to vulnerable populations, including low-income families, seniors, and the homeless. The program prioritizes efficient, compliant food handling and distribution while promoting sustainable impact and community well-being.

The Pentucket Bank Charitable Foundation has committed $50,000 over five years to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank, Inc. to support the construction of its new food distribution center.  This major project aims to raise $7.8 million to expand the organization’s capacity to combat hunger across the region.   The Merrimack Valley Food Bank is dedicated to ensuring the health and well-being of the community by providing critical access to nutritious food. Serving over 100 member agencies – including local food pantries and meal programs in 33 communities – the organization directly assists children, teens, older adults, individuals with disabilities, and low-income families in Greater Lowell.   “The Pentucket Bank Charitable Foundation is very pleased to provide a $50,000, 5-year grant to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank,” said Pentucket Bank President and CEO Stephen Jaskelevicus. “This funding will play a key role in building their new food distribution center, which is crucial to furthering their vital mission.
