Just how far will people go for the taste of KFC? That was the key question when Ogilvy South Africa and KFC announced the launch of an integrated ‘Beyond the Sea’ campaign inspired by the South Africans who spend more than a year on remote Marion Island in service of science. Marion Island, the tip of an undersea volcano 2,209km south-east of Cape Town, is one of South Africa’s farthest-flung territories. It’s the chilly base for teams of researchers who spend 13 months at a time there studying seabirds, seals, meteorology and space. KFC’s campaign began with teasers – ham radio messages that suddenly interrupted FM radio shows across the country and featured the voice of Mzuli Ntuli reporting on his voyage from Marion Island to Cape Town in a dinghy. The culmination of the campaign is a cinematic masterpiece depicting life on Marion Island, video calls with friends enjoying KFC in South Africa and the moment the duo set sail – clutching a KFC shopping list from their fellow islanders. Macpherson says most South Africans pining for KFC are unlikely to experience the same difficulties as the fictional Marion Island researchers. “With 1,100 restaurants across the country, the irresistible taste of KFC is never far away,” he says. “But we know that our customers will go to great lengths for our finger-lickin’ good food and we wanted to honour that devotion in a great story. Macpherson says the initial unbranded component of the campaign gave Marion Island scientists the opportunity to talk about their work, which involves saving threatened and endangered species and studying climate change and even the origins of the universe. #MarionIsland #AnythingForTheTaste Watch the Beyond The Sea TVC here: https://lnkd.in/d7y_i7Nx Chief Marketing Officer: Grant Macpherson Senior Marketing Manager: Mukundi Munzhelele Social Media: Vongai Mumbula Public Relations: Andra Nel, MBA Creative Agency: Ogilvy South Africa Media Agency: Mindshare South Africa, Hearts & Science PR Agency: KAMuses Consultancy Influencer Agency: Punkystarfish Digital Agency Activation: OFF LIMIT COMMUNICATION Production: 0307 Films

This World Earth Day, we look back to the launch of KFC South Africa’s LitterLotto campaign which has seen 76% change in positive consumer behaviour.   As a purpose-led brand that drives a recipe for good and growth, we care for the planet and the communities in which we operate and believe that as one of the world's largest restaurant companies, we have the responsibility and opportunity to take action on some of the most pressing social and environmental challenges in the world.   As a brand we are committed to moving consumer-facing plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025 and while this is a global commitment, locally it is no different! However, it doesn’t just stop within our business, it is about education and making sure that we further elevate our existing sustainability by driving a much stronger approach to end-of-life packaging.   It is this thinking that saw the inception of our partnership with LitterLotto - a first for the QSR sector in South Africa – addressing the root cause of litter and waste through behavioural science and nudge technology, encouraging consumers to bin their litter and, in return, stand the chance to be rewarded for it.   Aptly named All Taste, No Waste – it is based on a shared value approach which aims at making ‘doing good’ easy for every consumer while incentivising participation. And, what’s more, consumers can bin any waste, not just KFC waste, to stand a chance to win.   LitterLotto is a free mobile phone app which provides the opportunity for users to win on-the-spot prizes and weekly jackpots for 'doing the right thing and putting litter into the bin'. All consumers have to do is download the app, take a picture of them binning their litter and they will be entered into the KFC jackpot – giving consumers cash prizes periodically, with the opportunity to win spot prizes daily.   We have seen incredible success with this campaign where the 3-month trial between September and December 2023, across select restaurants, saw 624,446 pieces of litter binned in the 3 months. Similarly, 76% of consumers who took part indicated that they are more likely to dispose of their litter more responsibly after using the app.   We are a brand that is committed to growing sustainably by addressing climate change, emissions reduction in our restaurants, and investing in circularity and are extremely proud of this next step in our journey and believe that bringing consumers into the solution will go a long way in driving behavioural change. But more so, we are excited about what this partnership can do for the communities in which we operate – incentivising positive behaviour while cleaning up our cities.   Download the app, take a pic of you binning litter and you could win with KFC! #OrchidsandOnions: Scientists sail across the seas to satisfy their KFC craving Despite the inexorable advancements of technology, the old recipe for a successful ad still works today: tell an interesting story that entertains and weave it around your brand. That old-school storytelling is not commonplace today, in South Africa or marketing globally. So it’s refreshing to see that not only can it still be done, it can be done well.
