What is this about?

If you received an email or letter from Richmond University Medical Center (“RUMC”) informing you that your sensitive personal and protected health information was compromised in a data breach, you may be entitled to compensation. RUMC recently disclosed that it was the victim of a data breach that compromised sensitive personal and protected health information of 674,033 individuals.

What Happened?

On May 6, 2023, RUMC became aware of a security incident on its IT Network. RUMC launched an investigation with the assistance of third-party cyber security experts to determine the nature and scope of the incident. The investigation determined that an unauthorized third-party accessed or removed some files from RUMC’s IT Network on May 6, 2023.

RUMC then launched a comprehensive review to identify the exact type of information compromised as well identify the individuals affected by the data breach. The review was completed on December 1, 2024. On December 19, 2024, RUMC sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Information Was Impacted?

Although the exact type of personal and protected health information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by RUMC. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

• Name,
• Social Security number,
• Driver’s license or other government identification number,
• Account number, credit or debit card number,
• Health insurance information, and/or
• Medical information.
