The Chairman of the West Virginia Broadband Enhancement Council, Robbie Morris, has expressed hope that the recently released survey data will inform efforts to improve internet access in the state.
Morris noted that education, healthcare, and economics emerged as the main reasons why people use the internet.
The survey, conducted by TPMA in collaboration with the state Department of Economic Development’s Office of Broadband, revealed that although 90 percent of respondents have home internet access, they still face barriers to access. Availability, reliability, and cost were identified as the primary reasons for limited access. Over 60 percent of respondents reported that high-speed internet service was unavailable at their homes. The survey also highlighted the growing need for high-speed internet in West Virginia, with a high demand for increased access, speed, and reliability.
Even individuals without home internet access still rely on the internet for daily activities, as 87 percent of such respondents reported using the internet at least once a day. The survey indicated that email, banking, online shopping, and social media were the top reasons for internet usage.
While DSL and cable internet were found to be the most common types of internet connections, Frontier and Optimum were identified as the most commonly reported internet service providers in West Virginia. Paper surveys were made available to those who were unable to access the survey online.
