April is Autism Acceptance Month, and we are proud to partner with Focus Comics for their month-long free military vehicle art program championing autistic kids. At the end of the month in Glendale, Arizona, Focus Comics will hold a graduation event for the students, and present Hero of the Year Awards to eight military and first responder heroes. To celebrate, the Charmobile will roll up to feed superhero kid graduates, their families, and first responders for free! 🍔 Helmed by Yvonne Wan, Focus Comics pioneers inclusion with one of the world's first autistic superheroes 🦸♂️ The organization offers free art camps, internships, and publication opportunities for autistic individuals, enhancing their vocational skills and employment prospects. Stay tuned for pictures from the event! Learn more about the organization, here: https://focuscomic.com/ 🎨 #AutismAcceptanceMonth #FocusComics

I came across many organisations that pride themselves on being experts or knowledgeable on disabilities (and, shockingly, this includes NHS). I talk to some of their employees and their bosses, managers, and colleagues are not trained and not knowledgeable on disabilities. This wouldn't be such a massive issue if not for the fact that this lack of knowledge causes great harm to vulnerable people. Let me show it in more detail, what are all of the stages of the, well, let's call it "unintended harm hire": 1. After months of struggle, disabled or neurodivergent employee finally decides to send their job applications. 2. They get increased panic attacks and anxiety around writing applications, sending them, getting responses, attending interviews. 3. The process - usually still very much non inclusive - causes them health issues. 4. Suddenly the employee comes across the organisation stating they are "disability friendly" employers. 5. The candidate gets interviewed by them and they agree on accommodations. The candidate starts feeling safe and relaxed for the first time. 6. Few weeks (sometimes even days) into working at the company, the issue occurs of the company leadership not understanding why the employee has so many different symptoms. Them pointing it out to the employee cause the employee to struggle to do their work. 7. The company launches a performance improvement procedure. This will directly lead to: huge health damage of the employee, trauma, severe anxiety, loss of confidence, and eventually quitting the job, and feeling betrayed. This is the reality everyone. And honestly, it would be better if the organisations would honestly admit they are not perfect, but want to learn rather than getting those awards of being disability friendly that have nothing to do with the true situation. I want to develop this assessment programme for organisations, to protect people with disabilities and neurodiversity. I don't believe the Disability friendly scheme works, in fact it's actually becoming part of the problem. If anyone would be interested in joining the effort, please dm me, there is no reason why this couldn't be a joint work. #disabilitytrainedemployers #disabledemployers #neurodiversity
So my brilliant autistic daughter is doing an internship with a nationally recognized "expert" on autism. And this "expert" just told her that when she accepted her as an intern, she was expecting my daughter to just have a few sensory issues. She was not expecting social misunderstandings and high anxiety. In what world does someone who knows so little about autistic adults become recognized as an authority on autism? (I'm naming no names, because my daughter really needs to finish this internship.)

Hi All. Just wondering if anybody knows of any type of register, company directory, list of UK organisations which actively support neurodiverse younglings in terms of work experience, apprenticeships within their technology functions? Yes, I know many orgs do, yes I know many have DE&I policies to support this but finding such information can be itself difficult to find for neurodiverse individuals. For context this from Aviva is a great example. https://lnkd.in/eqhUqDkQ Thanks in advance.
Excited to announce a new internship programme that will help young adults on the autism spectrum transition from education into employment. The Norwich based initiative - in partnership with The Wherry School Trust, Norfolk County Council and the national transition-to-work charity DFN Project SEARCH - will create urgently needed inclusive employment opportunities for young adults with autism. And will provide specialised training and practical work experience from our city centre offices in Norwich. The Wherry School, Norwich – a specialist school for Autistic Learners - will host an open evening about the programme on Thursday 23rd November 2023 at 4:00pm to help young people and their families find out more about the internship opportunities and how to apply. The event will be an opportunity to meet the education team at the Wherry School, and is open to anyone interested in the internship, including those who may already be in their final years of education in another setting. Attendees will also meet the wider project team at Aviva and other young people exploring similar workplace opportunities. Please contact the school for more information. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eWQd88zV https://lnkd.in/eYH4agA8

Revealing Talent through the Power of Play - guiding HR Leaders to seamlessly integrate Gaming & Esports into their strategy.
Bringing Practical Insights to Today’s HESSENMETALL Event Today, I have the privilege of speaking at Haus der Wirtschaft in Offenbach, where I'll share how integrating gaming skills can positively impact HR practices, especially for apprentices. Coming from a working-class background, I understand firsthand the nurturing and commitment required to unlock an apprentice’s potential. These young individuals need more than just traditional training; they need environments that recognize and cultivate their unique skills. 🎮 Gaming as a Development Tool In my talk today, I’ll explore how the strategic and team-oriented skills developed in gaming can be valuable in the professional growth of apprentices. At metagame, we see these skills as crucial for personal and professional development, helping bridge the gap between youthful enthusiasm and professional expectations. 🌐 Engage and Empower Join us as we discuss practical ways to enhance apprenticeship programs through gaming insights. It’s about providing the right tools and opportunities for personal development that align with the evolving demands of our digital world. Looking forward to connecting with fellow leaders and shaping supportive pathways for our future workforce. Pia Büßecker Matthias Ruhland Tobias Scholz

We know most autistic young people want to work but face stigma, rejection and a lack of opportunity in the current job market. #AutismAcceptanceWeek We want to stop this cycle before it begins for the next generation of autistic young people, by building a bridge from education into employment. Our Employ Autism programme offers autistic people paid internship opportunities in autism-supportive environments. Our programme gives autistic young people a better chance of securing work, and increases the awareness, attitudes and confidence of employers to benefit from a neurodivergent workforce. #WAAW24
