Last week, Arevon Energy, Inc.’s CEO Kevin Smith shared his insights regarding the technologies, market factors, and policy drivers shaping the renewable energy industry. Jonathan Berke, the host of the NPM US (New Project Media) Interconnections Podcast, posed questions about MISO interconnection reforms, Arevon’s growing presence in CAISO, and how the company views transmission investments.  Kevin highlighted Arevon’s growing portfolio of storage assets, the maturation of battery technologies, and the impact of the IRA’s transferability provision on deal flow. He explained that perceptions around standalone storage as an asset class have shifted over the past couple of years, as lenders are more comfortable with underwriting these projects now. Kevin outlined the unique capital structure for Arevon’s Vikings Solar-plus-Storage Project, Condor Energy Storage Project, Cormorant Energy Storage Project, and Eland 2 Solar-plus-Storage Project, noting that Condor was one of the first deals in the market with a tax equity hybrid transfer structure. He highlighted Arevon’s strong relationships with banking partners, and the company’s tailored approach to project finance, which has resulted in more than $2.3 billion in financing in less than six months. If a firm planned to build a “baseload” natural gas plant with a utilization rate of 80 percent, it could instead build twice that capacity and operate it half as much to comply with the rule. This strategy would shift investment patterns to lower efficiency gas plants—specifically more combustion turbines than combined cycle facilities—which would increase per unit emissions. SolAmerica Energy Secures $129 Million Financing for 18 MW Illinois Solar Portfolio SolAmerica Energy has secured $129 million in financing for an 18 MW solar portfolio comprising seven projects in Illinois. The funding includes a $50 million construction loan from KeyBank and a $79 million sale-leaseback tax equity investment from Key Equipment Finance. These solar projects are expected to become operational in 2025. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, SolAmerica Energy specializes in developing and managing community-scale solar projects. The company is owned by funds managed by AB CarVal. Data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) illustrates the current "readiness" of #ClimateTechs + their potential impact on carbon reduction. As shown, many techs are at an early stage of being able to have a material impact. Concerningly, some tech funds recently returned capital back to investors recently + closed their funds - citing inability to fund capital intensive techs, found in areas like ClimateTech. This in part may be contributing to the $2 trillion shortfall in ClimateTech, that Deloitte estimates. What this may mean for the future? - The migration of LPs to global, super VC funds within ClimateTech, given the large capital pools needed to fund tech development - Greater specialization from smaller funds, energizing more niche elements of the ClimateTech market - but also altering their / LP's risk profile - A greater role to be played by debt financing in funding growth entities at an earlier stage - impacting cashflow dynamics Will be an interesting space to watch moving forward. The bipartisan Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024 released by U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (I-WV) and John Barrasso (R-WY) takes a much needed step in accelerating the permitting process for critical energy projects in the U.S. As the legislation spornors's state (shared here), our outdated permitting system is stifling our ability to move clean energy projects forward, which in turn has adverse economic effects and inhibits our ability to reduce emissions. I'm glad to see these bipartisan efforts are moving toward fixing a broken permitting system that has shackled American energy production for far too long. #EnergyProduction #EnergyPermitting

Mark Nelson, Managing Director of Radiant Energy Group, appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box this morning to discuss the latest developments in big tech investments in nuclear energy. His appearance coincided with Amazon's announcement of a $500+ million investment to develop nuclear reactors in partnership with X-energy. During the interview, Nelson highlighted the emerging trend among tech giants: "What we'll start to see is a race between the biggest tech companies to make bigger and bigger, more immediate investments in nuclear power."
