We are now confident that the extensive felsite dikes are the target unit and that the fluids responsible for the antimony deposits traversed the thick sequence of Triassic sediments via the through going dike. Proposed drilling for 2025 will focus on these dikes at shallow (<100m) depths". Mac Shahsavar, P. Eng., the Chairman and CEO of Xtra Energy, stated, "Xtra Energy is currently in the permitting process for a drilling campaign along the felsite dike and beneath the numerous antimony mines and prospects in Bernice Canyon. The receipt of a Notice of Intent from the BLM will allow Xtra to commence road reparations this Spring and commence drilling these shallow antimony targets shortly thereafter".

Once traded comfortably below the $15,000-a-tonne mark in Europe, antimony has jumped in price by about 375 per cent since the start of 2024 because of a global feedstock shortage and Chinese export controls that came into effect in September 2024. The current price of duty-unpaid material in Europe’s principal Rotterdam hub is $56,000-$58,000 a tonne. With no quick way to bring more supply from outside into play, the squeeze is unlikely to end soon. Fierce competition for materials is likely to guarantee unusually high antimony prices for the foreseeable future.

Chinese export restrictions on Antimony hitting harder. International parcels are over $50,000/t, whilst the China inland market is $20,000/t, China needs this material just as anyone else. They will pay up domestically, else it leaks. The question is 'where will prices settle'? Back in 2012, I wrote about the market long-term drivers, the last table from report showed the then Sb metal price (c. $10,000/t back then - see below) vs its crustal abundance and where it 'should' be priced if priced in line with its rarity and other similar metals of its kind. Sb should have been 'valued' much higher back then. Given today's supply chain concerns, it is just getting to where it should have been. This figure is around $70,000/t, until certain market dynamics take hold. Even if China exports normalise, we all know there is little ready material, the lead times are long. Then the question of where to process, this is the bottle neck we acted on back in 2011 with the initiation of SPMP, now looking like the belle of the ball. The real issue is that every powerful nation & region needs its own source and a route to market. UK & EU for sure. Over the period of 1970-2010, Chinese output of antimony increased 4x fold. The metal was abundant and prices, relative to other metals declined for years. Caviar for everyone! Given Sb is 300x more scare then copper, it traded at just 1x to 2x the copper price. It is 10x more scare than tin and often been a third of the price. Antimony end uses shrinks as prices go up, but rest assured, Sb's high & unique efficacy in key sectors and uses is so critical, are not driven by price but shear availability. I am hearing the substitution cries already. Leaves room for higher utility purposes. The antimony market should never have been over 100,000tpa given how scare it really is. It will eventually get to half that and with even higher prices in the future, as demand in high tech uses sets the price and supply remains constricted. Sb west may touch $70,000/t soon as the diagram predicted. But, when assessing medium term price floors, for new projects and markets, I look at the geology of what there is actually available. Current population of projects are small mines at around the 1% to 2% Sb, some with nice credits of gold and others with harder to treat lead and arsenic. The typical mining dilution, costs, treatment & transport charges need a floor c. $35,000/t to make a reasonable return. Many of projects will run out over the next decade. Once mined out, the next average geological grade orebodies will then decline to c.0.5% Sb range. These are larger, more metallurgically complex, net Sb pricing will have to rise to support, unless there is gold associated. Sb could be over $140k/t by then and a smaller higher value market c.40,000tpa. Risks to this may be any new east China discoveries pop up vs new tech uses. Markets may well be forced to accelerate all these changes.
