House hunters with a passion for Clearwater history and a lot of money in the bank still have an opportunity to place a bid on historic Century Oaks.
The sprawling property was meant to go on the auction block Oct. 11, but the sale has been postponed until Nov. 22, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
That $8.5 million is the lowest possible bid that would be accepted for the 24,000-square-foot mansion. The desired sale price is much higher, the Times pointed out.
“A $15 to $18 million sale does not occur after a few days or a few hours,” the Times quoted Daniel DeCaro of DeCaro Luxury Auctions as saying.
World-champion powerboat racer and Tampa Bay area businessman Hugh Fuller put historic Century Oaks on the market last year with an asking price of $17.5 million. Touted as the “most spectacular waterfront site in Pinellas,” on Zillow.com, the 3.45-acre spread includes a main house, a “north” house, two pools, carriage house, boat docks, basketball court, tennis court and more all behind a gated compound.
The main house covers 23,159 square feet of living space and boasts 10 bedrooms, 15 full and nine half baths. There’s also a ball room, music studio, trophy room, library and theater. The secondary home covers 5,000 square feet and has four bedrooms, a gym and billiard room, among other features, according to Zillow.
The house hit the market back in June 2013, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The 802 S. Druid Road property was once owned by British Formula 1 racer Nigel Mansell. The sprawling estate was built in 1915, paving the way for the creation of Harbor Oaks, Clearwater’s first planned subdivision.
Century Oaks last sold in 1996 for $5.5 million, according to the Pinellas County Property Appraiser’s Office. The home’s 2013 estimated tax bill was $167,443.79, county records indicate.
