If your financial institution is serving businesses (big or small) the same way as from five years ago, you're already failing. “Interest rates have tripled in the last 24 months,” says Stephanie Castagnier Dunn, head of SBA lending at Grasshopper Bank. This has caused a “credit compression” among small firms that will continue in the “higher for longer” environment that’s shaping up. Many entrepreneurs are also turning to personal credit to get their businesses off the ground, leading to a growing need for debt consolidation through SBA loans. However, the proliferation of online "fast, easy money" options has led some borrowers into costly traps with severe prepayment and exit penalties. Remote work plays heavily into the scope of these major changes too, impacting small firms' needs for commercial real estate and their approach to recruitment and compensation. To adapt to these changes, banks like Grasshopper are combining the human touch with digital solutions. While emphasizing the availability of loan officers for consultation, the bank has also launched a digital pre-qualification form to cater to the 24/7 nature of small business lending.
