I learned 3 things at #GraceHopperCelebration this week 1. Network with peers! Like most people, I was attracted to speakers/attendees with the biggest titles from the biggest firms. Then it hit me that it’s from my peers where I can receive the most effective support(because we’ve just been through similar challenges), and it’s people in my early career that I can give the most effective support (because my resources are exactly matching their needs). This pivotal change in my understanding altered my experience, I have since become more intentional and made a lot of rewarding connections! 2. The path to get ahead. No one asks Sr Execs what they are struggling with. These leaders give - A LOT and all the time! It makes me think about what kind of path to Sr exec do I want to take. What kind of nurturing relationships I can build today and along the path? 3. Every conversation is a coaching conversation. On day 1 of GHC, I hosted a flash mob-style résumé screening session with 20+ fresh graduates. I want to give back as I was there myself many years ago. Before I knew it, two male students grabbed my attention at every gap and took 80% of the airspace, while the female students looked timidly waiting for their turn to speak. Upon reflection, I realized I had not developed the awareness to recognize the situation and the skill to direct the conversation! I have since observed similar situations during networking sessions. It makes me wonder: am I seeing this only at GHC or does it also happen at work? What opportunities do I have to influence that and create a more equitable environment where every voice can be heard? GHC 23 has been a truly rewarding experience for me. So much learning, connection, and sharing. Reflecting on everything that transpired in Q1, I'm taking a moment to celebrate the milestones achieved and the lessons learned. It's incredible how quickly time flies, but it's never too late to pause and give credit where it's due. As I delve into the highlights of the past quarter, I'm excited to share the progress made in various aspects of my life and work. 1. Career Growth: Taking that leap in my career and successfully navigating through the probation period was both a challenge and a triumph. It's a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the support of amazing colleagues and mentors. I'm excited to continue this journey of growth and development. 2. Personal Development: They say that leaders are readers, and I've taken that mantra to heart. Diving into 15+ books 📚 across various genres has not only expanded my knowledge but also fueled my creativity and critical thinking. 3. Professional Achievements: Meeting and surpassing the PAD target of 300 pads was no small feat. It required strategic planning, dedication, and teamwork. I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such impactful projects and eager to tackle even bigger challenges ahead. 4. Skill Enhancement: Completing a Product Management class was a highlight of Q1. It provided me with invaluable tools, frameworks, and perspectives to excel in my role and drive innovation within my team. Continuous learning is key to staying relevant in today's dynamic landscape. 5. Commitment to Community: Being part of the Women Techstar Fellowship has been a source of inspiration and empowerment. Lessons, mentorship, and a support network have been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. Looking ahead to Q2, I'm energized and focused on smashing my goals. Whether it's advancing in my career, expanding my skill set, or making a positive impact in the community, I'm ready to tackle the challenges head-on. With consistency, determination, and a growth mindset, I'm confident that I'll turn my aspirations into achievements. What started only 10 months ago as a weekend passion has now taken a life of its own. Over the last six months, I’ve been part of the Women Accelerators mentorship program. Our program just ended so I thought I’d share some of the key takeaways from my experience. ♦️ Stay curious - What’s something you want to learn more about? Ask questions to dig deeper on a topic you’re interested in. - Your habits = your identity. What do yours say about you? ♦️ Teamwork and leadership - Build trust. Continuous communication and transparency are crucial here. - Get into more of a habit of publicly shouting out colleagues for a job well done. Big and small things. - Before providing your own opinions, ask the team what they think. Encourage participation and ownership. ♦️ Career context - Take note of times your stage management experience parallels your current role to uncover the similarities. - Networking is key! Connect with people doing interesting things that you want to learn more about. ♦️ Getting over perfectionism - Set the expectation with yourself that something will go wrong. - Do less well and be consistent. - “The show must go on” mindset - let’s put on the best show we can. There’s no such thing as perfect and that’s ok. We covered a LOT more ground than this, but these are a few highlights of this fruitful 6-month mentorship program. I was challenged to dig deeper and examine how I view and approach things and was given tools and things to consider that I’ll carry with me.
