In early trade, the Straits Times Index headed down 0.2 per cent to 3,309.13 points after 21 million securities changed hands in the broader market. In terms of companies to watch, we have Frasers Logistics & Commercial Trust. Its distribution per unit (DPU) for the first half of the fiscal year declined 1.1 per cent to S$0.0348. Meanwhile, from more on Tokyo Disney Resort’s S$2.8 billion expansion to Apple reportedly developing its homegrown chip to run AI tools in data centres, more corporate and international headlines remain in focus. As noted in PEI's #infrastructure investor series in #seoul/ #tokyo, Japan's Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), a ~USD 70 billion entity recently created by the Japanese government as a master public university endowment (public #endowments in Japan have been quite limited on investment capabilities and capital due to limited inbound contributions) will be making more investments in funds/co-investments with fund manager relationships as they continue to build the team and reduce reliance on advisors. Initially heavily dependent upon asset #consultants / #gatekeepers, this group is on pace to becoming a highly sophisticated institutional investor in Japan. Definitely a group to track. Separately, on the endowment topic in Japan, private universities such as Keio University, Waseda University, Tokyo University of Science, Sophia University, Ritsumeikan University, Meiji University, International Christian University all have capabilities (varying degrees of sophistication and capital) to invest in alternatives, often, but not always, using international and local gatekeepers / consultants. Of the nearly 800 public and private universities, I have tracked 15-20, mostly private, universities that invest in alternative assets and private markets. Giddy Up!! GDSI has now brought the party to Thailand and upped its recent financing to $1.2 billion. Also SoftBank and Ken Griffen are now believers/partners in helping the company scale globally. This recent financing places over a $4B value on the new company that was just launched earlier this year. This also implies that GDS’s share price excluding the GDSI platform is trading at one of the most attractive multiples for any data center business globally…let alone the one that has the most dominant market share position in all of mainland China. The AI surge will eventually take off in China as well, and no company is better positioned for that growth than GDS.
