“We’re lovers, not fighters.” That’s what Taco John’s CEO Jim Creel had to say in a company statement, ending the recent legal battle between Taco John’s and Taco Bell over the right to use the trademarked term “Taco Tuesday.” Taco John’s, a regional fast-food chain of roughly 400 restaurants, has owned the “Taco Tuesday” trademark since 1989 in every state across the U.S. (except for New Jersey). But in May, its much larger rival, Taco Bell, filed a petition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel the trademark, claiming the phrase was too general and common to license. Taco John’s had originally opted to defend the trademark, but ultimately decided against it due to the potential cost of doing so. “We’ve always prided ourselves on being the home of Taco Tuesday, but paying millions of dollars to lawyers to defend our mark just doesn’t feel like the right thing to do,” said Creel. What Taco John’s did next, however, was brilliant. In the same statement, Creel announced that Taco John’s would be pledging a $40,000 donation (roughly $100 per store) to the non-profit organization of Children of Restaurant Employees (CORE), which provides financial support to restaurant employees and their families when facing crises like serious illness, injury, or natural disaster. Then, Creel challenged Taco Bell to do the same. If Taco Bell matches Taco John’s $100-per-restaurant pledge, it would donate about $720,000—“which is less than they’d have to spend in a legal battle for the mark,” says Creel. Taco John’s decision is more than just a smart marketing move, it’s a clever lesson in emotional intelligence, the ability to understand and manage emotions to your advantage. Costco is a different kind of place. It's one of the most admirable capitalistic institutions in the world. And its CEO, Jim Sinegal, is one of the most admirable retailers to ever live on this planet. Costco will continue making huge contributions to society. It has a frantic desire to serve customers a little better every year. When other companies find ways to save money, they turn it into profit. Sinegal passes it on to customers. Congratulations to William Gordon-Harris and the entire team at Knoops on their impressive £8.3m fundraising, a significant milestone that positions them for substantial expansion.
