Metamaterial-Enhanced Technology We have been exploring several ways in which metamaterials can advance real-life technology, from highly efficient opto- electronics (see our MURI effort) to energy harvesting, sensing, radio-wave and optical antennas and metasurfaces.
Cloaking and Invisibility One of the most exciting applications of metamaterials: our group has pioneered the use of plasmonic and mantle cloaks for drastic scattering suppression of radio-waves, infrared, matter, sound and light waves.
Non-Reciprocity and Topology Our group has been exploring several exciting concepts to exploit symmetry- breaking to enable extreme wave phenomena (see our MURI and STC efforts), including non-reciprocity and topological metamaterials for light and sound.
Multi-Physics Metamaterials We have been exploring multi-physics platforms to extend the playground of opportunities enabled by metamaterials for technology, including opto-mechanical phenomena, thermal effects, plasmonics and polaritonics.

March 28, 2024: Our paper on noninvasive glucose snsing has appeared in Physical Review Applied and featured in Physics. January 25, 2024: Andrea Alù has received the Optica Max Born Award for pioneering contributions to linear, nonlinear and nonreciprocal photonic metamaterials. January 16, 2024: Our paper on coherent control of chaotic cavities  with reflectionless scattering modes  has been featured on the cover of Nature Physics. [News and Views, Press release] January 11, 2024: Andrea Alù has  received the SPIE Mozi Award for outstanding discoveries, scientific and technical achievements, or inventions in the field of optics. January 10, 2024: Our paper on extreme polaritonics driven by lower symmetries has been published in Nature Reviews Materials, and featured on the cover. January 9, 2024: Our paper on passive, bias-free nonreciprocal metasurfaces driven by nonlinear quasi-bound states  has been published in Nature Photonics and featured in a News and Views article.

Welcome to Andrea Alù’s research group webpage Andrea Alù is a Distinguished Professor, founding director of the Photonics Initiative at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, Einstein Professor of Physics at the CUNY Graduate Center, and Professor of Electrical Engineering at The City College of New York.  He is affiliated with the Wireless Networking and Communications Group and the Applied Research Laboratories, both based at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is a Senior Research Scientist and Adjunct Professor.  His research interests span over a broad range of technical areas, including applied electromagnetics, nano-optics and nanophotonics, microwave, THz, infrared, optical and acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces, plasmonics, nonlinearities and nonreciprocity, cloaking and scattering, acoustics, optical nanocircuits and nanoantennas.
