"We surveyed UK respondents, asking them to list (without prompting) the three factors they thought most likely to cause human extinction in the next 100 years. ● We estimate AI risk to be reported by 9% of British adults, at a similar level to Natural disasters (10%). ● The relative ordering of risks aligns well with previous polling from YouGov in 2023, using an alternative methodology. Climate change (58%) and Nuclear weapons/WMDs (42%) were top concerns, followed by Pandemics (37%). ● Some demographic effects were quite large, such as that men were substantially more likely than women to raise the issue of nuclear weapons. ● Polling suggests AI risk is not a wholly niche issue, but is substantially less of a concern to the public than cases such as nuclear weapons or the climate." As AI continues to shape the future, the UK is poised to lead. Yesterday, Keir Starmer laid out Labour’s vision for a more prosperous UK, and it’s clear that AI strategy must be at the heart of this ambition. Mostly what's discussed in the media were about safety. But to truly position the UK as an #AI superpower, the three critical enablers that need a lot of discussion and actions are: energy, supercomputing, and people. Importantly, the issue isn’t very much their availability—it’s their costs. • #Energy: Advanced AI systems require enormous power, but the UK’s high energy costs risk making innovation prohibitively expensive. UK electricity is twice expensive as the US, and more than five times than China. Yes there is purchasing power parity etc, but you sell things globally! Affordable, clean energy must underpin our AI growth. • #Supercomputing: The UK has fallen out top 50 countries with supercomputers. How you can fight a contemporary war with sticks? • #Skills: While the UK has world-class AI talent, the cost of cultivating, attracting, and retaining these skills is rising, threatening our competitive edge. And it is not just technical skills, but also entrepreneurial skills to spot market opportunity and want to take the risk to do something about it. The potential is there—now it’s about ensuring cost isn’t the bottleneck to progress. We also survey the various optimistic and pessimistic assessments and we sit somewhere in the middle. The most worrying thing for AI is model collapse, AI cannibalizing itself. As for the most pessimistic views. We thought it was true to form that it is an MIT economist, Acemoglu, who seems to be most intent on downplaying developments in AI. This follows in the footsteps of two Nobel laureates. Solow famously said in 1987 "you can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics". Krugman predicted in 1998 that the internet would have less of an impact than the fax machine.

With the UK public sector, how will members of the public have a consistent experience if each public sector body interprets these principles differently? Those are the 10 principles in the Generative AI Framework for HMG. Principle 1: You know what generative AI is and what its limitations are Principle 2: You use generative AI lawfully, ethically and responsibly Principle 3: You know how to keep generative AI tools secure Principle 4: You have meaningful human control at the right stage Principle 5: You understand how to manage the full generative AI lifecycle Principle 6: You use the right tool for the job Principle 7: You are open and collaborative Principle 8: You work with commercial colleagues from the start Principle 9: You have the skills and expertise needed to build and use generative AI Principle 10: You use these principles alongside your organisation’s policies and have the right assurance in place https://lnkd.in/eDXvWrKf These are largely common sense—they are principles. The issue is that each organisation is likely to interpret these differently, which is good as each context is different.
