🚆 Next-Generation Rail Communications: The Future is Here! 🚆 Railroads are evolving, and so is the technology that powers them. At Ondas Networks, we are at the forefront of revolutionizing Head-of-Train (HOT) and End-of-Train (EOT) communications—solving critical challenges that impact safety, efficiency, and scalability in modern rail operations. 🔹 Longer Trains, Greater Challenges With railroads operating longer trains to improve efficiency, existing legacy communication systems on the 450 MHz network struggle with reliability. Signal fading, outdated modulation schemes, and limited data capacity put operational safety at risk. 🔹 802.16t: The Breakthrough Technology for Rail Ondas Networks is leading the industry with 802.16t radio technology—a game-changer that enhances train telemetry, enables Positive Train Location (PTL), and supports the industry’s push toward Moving Block operations. With Direct Peer-to-Peer (DPP) mode, advanced security, and higher data throughput, railroads can confidently deploy Next-Generation HOT-EOT systems. 🔹 Why This Matters Our latest research and real-world testing confirm that 802.16t can modernize railway communications without requiring additional spectrum or infrastructure overhauls—offering a cost-effective and scalable solution for the future. 🚀 Join the Rail Revolution! 🚀 Want to learn how Ondas Networks is shaping the future of railway safety and efficiency? When it comes to solving the problem of next-generation HOT-EOT communications, the answer is to keep it simple. Be mindful, however, that “simple” should not be confused with “primitive.” It actually means quite the opposite. With the focus on PSR for so many years, it’s pretty easy for one to think that the issue associated with HOT-EOT communications on longer trains is the “only” issue we’re trying to address. Yet the industry is really looking to enable a wide array of new safety and operational technologies with the adoption of next-generation HOT – EOT (“NGHE”) communications. This will require not just “obvious” improvements such as advanced modulation and coding schemes, but also innovative receive signal recovery mechanisms to address the “long train” problem. There are currently several elegant solutions proposed for NGHE communications – everything from aggregation of many of the AAR-owned 450 MHz frequencies to the option to utilize the 220 MHz wayside network as a repeater for EOT communications. Some of these proposals are promising and could enable at least some features of the NGHE effort. However, I always come back to asking the same questions: What if we can deliver an NGHE solution within the existing paradigm? An NGHE solution that operates on existing 450 MHz channels, within the current power and size constraints, with the ability to mitigate even the deepest RF fading associated with longer trains operating higher speeds? Of course, that gets people’s attention. So by “simple,” what I am proposing is that we can solve the problem of NGHE communications without major changes to spectrum usage or requiring the use of additional VHF to augment the 450 MHz network. What we can deliver is – simply – an advanced 450 MHz radio designed to meet the requirements of NGHE and longer train operation. Over the last year, Ondas Networks has been testing our NGHE solution in real-world environments. The results we have delivered so far have given confidence to the railroad industry that not only is a technical solution to NGHE communications feasible – but very real. If you’re interested in learning more about NGHE communications and the solution I’m talking about here, take a look at our latest paper below. I’d also invite you to visit our website where you can learn more about other applications of 802.16t technology in the rail industry.
