“MITS is a non-profit Massachusetts based organization providing, high quality professional development for K-12 (Kindergarten to 12th Grade) teachers and informal educators. Through collaborations with over 100 #museums, aquaria, nature centers, and other non-profit science education organizations, MITS educator workshops and programs increase awareness of and improve the quality of teaching inquiry-based, minds-on, hands-on STEM education. By providing teachers with the knowledge, skills and resources to provide effective STEM instruction, MITS' programs increase student interest and achievement in science, technology and engineering." Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) is an excellent teaching method, especially for science. Due to students' innate curiosity, this method is a natural extension of this. Students' questions, alongside a flexible, IBL lesson plan, can drive students to achieve more because they will want to have their questions answered. It takes practice to develop this teaching skill. How do you use IBL with your students? I encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments. #MuseumEducation #STEM https://lnkd.in/gskzJKNP

How Close Social Groups and Citizen Science Can Bolster STEM Persistence for All Article by: Aubrey Whitehead, Virginia Military Institute “With the specter of the pandemic finally receding, we all now embrace and appreciate the value of learning away from screens. There have been many anecdotes of parents in search of non-asynchronous learning opportunities for their previously-homebound children. They took opportunities to explore interactive, in-person, educationally-sound activities that were able to hold their kids’ attention, particularly, for children interested in the exploration and discovery offered by STEM pursuits. But now the million-dollar question: What can parents do to spark and maintain their children’s curiosity? Turns out, quite a bit.” Follow the link to learn more about leveraging citizen science to increase representation in STEM https://lnkd.in/e2Vv78BA

Safeguarding, not manipulating by a foreign polluter. Our hospitals are crying out for staff, yet we see our children being influenced and offered apprenticeships by an overseas company whose operation creates emissions that will severely impact the health of future generations and their planet. In Sussex, local schools are allowing Gatwick into the classroom – permitting access to vulnerable children, influencing them into thinking that aviation is glamourous, and encouraging them to visit the airport on the pretence of learning about science, technology, engineering, and maths. This is simply promoting to our young, impressionable children that jobs should be sought in an industry that is one of the major contributors to global warming. Quoting government: ‘The Green Jobs Taskforce launched in 2020 to set the direction for the job market as we transition to a high-skill, low carbon economy. The taskforce concluded in July 2021’ – so why not use greener forms of energy and transport to educate future generations, so that greener thinking is encapsulated from the outset – rather than promoting cheap leisure holidays and “flying is ok”, when we know it is not? The Taskforce group detailed the UK’s ambitions for green jobs: · the skills needed to drive a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic · the skills needed to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 · how the UK can ensure green jobs are good jobs, and open to all · how workers in high carbon-sectors can be supported to transition to the new green economy. https://lnkd.in/etxb5bwj Yet local children are being wooed by a commercial airport that seeks a new runway which will add anything from 0.5m-1.5m extra tonnes of carbon every year, plus greenhouse gases – from a second runway alone. Hospitals, including Redhill, are offering apprenticeships – but will students seek these positions if we allow the brainwashing of our children now to an industry portrayed as glamourous? Will this be encouraging them to study STEM subjects to save lives? Statutory guidance suggests that our vulnerable children should be protected from outside influences; they should be shown safeguarding when it comes to the commissioning of education and training. So, is it appropriate to allow young minds to be so influenced by a commercial airport when the industry in question (as with this Sussex airport) is struggling to decarbonise? CAGNE suggests that places of education would do better directing STEM education towards greener forms of transport or the retrofitting of homes with alternative fuels. This would aid our transition to net zero, sustainability for employment and longevity of careers, as suggested by the government’s own task force.

Monash University PlayLab has produced another set of video sets showcasing the impact of a Conceptual PlayWorld on teachers and children. Here is a one minute promo of a Conceptual PlayWorld of Charlotte's Web to support science learning in the early years of school. We are thrilled that so many teachers in schools are reaching out to us - seeking an evidence-informed model to bring imagination in STEM and imagination in play into their classrooms.

Ever wondered if your educational program could win an Emmy??? 🤔 Ask this Dallas philanthropist who funded an educational TV show aimed for girls 13-17 to get interested in STEM, and the answer is YES! 👊(Link in comments) 🎬While many of us probably won’t be winning one any time soon (neither am I winning a Grammy much to my pre-teen self’s dismay), it IS possible to pull from what makes something “Emmy worthy” or “binge worthy” and apply that to our work in learning and development. ✨ Even if your content is deemed “boring” or “too technical” we can still find ways to engage and valutain our audiences. Even keep them coming back to learn more. ❓How are you challenging yourself to valutain (provide value and entertain) your audience in 2024? #learninganddevelopment #instructionaldesign #corporatetraining
