On this International Day of People with Disability, let's celebrate the diversity and resilience of people with disabilities, and reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable world for all. This year's theme, "Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fueling an accessible and equitable world," highlights the importance of innovation in creating a more inclusive world for people with disabilities. From assistive technologies to inclusive design, innovation is playing a vital role in breaking down barriers and empowering people with disabilities to participate fully in all aspects of society. But innovation alone is not enough. We also need to change our mindsets and attitudes towards disability. We need to see people with disabilities as valuable members of our communities, and not as a burden. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and as we recognize #NDEAM, we shed light on a significant disparity: People with disabilities remain underemployed. We’re reminded of the stark contrast in labor force participation rates: In 2022, just 20.2% for people with disabilities compared to 69.2% for those without. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a significant time to address the topic of disability inclusion in the workplace. Despite many companies prioritizing DEIB efforts, individuals with disabilities are often overlooked when organizations formulate their strategies. A DEI survey by Disability:IN found that while disabled people account for approximately 1-in-4 Americans, just 4.5% of hires at participating companies self-identified as disabled (up 0.5% from 2022). Disability inclusion is about more than just hiring people with disabilities or being ADA-compliant. Companies need to be intentional about their DEI strategies and take an honest look at the policies, practices, and procedures they have in place to ensure their employees with disabilities — visible or invisible — can achieve their highest potential and thrive.
