Dr. Jason Brinton of Brinton Vision in St. Louis recently produced an article asking, How Long Does Refractive Lens Exchange Last? This article discusses the amount of time patients continue to benefit from the results of their Refractive Lens Exchange Surgery. Refractive Lens Exchange, or RLE, is a procedure that uses a clear implantable lens to replace the eye's natural lens to correct refractive errors and sharpen focus.
The procedure can use three categories of IOLs, or intraocular lenses, to replace the natural lens depending on the patients' individual visual needs and eye health: monofocal/fixed-focus IOLs, multifocal IOLS, and extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLS. Each lens offers the clear vision in different distances, so a doctor can recommend the best lens for a particular patient based on their daily needs and current visual acuity.
The article discusses ideal patients for RLE–those with "both presbyopia (over-40 vision) and either hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness), or astigmatism". However, the degree of refractive error may affect the results and procedure itself.
Finally, the article examines RLE procedures' results: how long they last and if other procedures can be performed afterward. The IOLs are "designed to be a lifetime solution to the vision problems that were occurring before," intending to serve the patient for as long as possible while also enabling other vision correction surgeries such as LASIK if they become necessary
