URGENT - Forgotten Navajo Natives Need Help Now!

URGENT: FORGOTTEN NAVAJO COMMUNITY NEEDS URGENT FINANCIAL HELP

Dear friends, family, and all compassionate human beings on this planet,

While many of us are fighting one deadly pandemic, there are still many of our cherished neighbors also fighting other battles at the same time including starvation, abuse and disease.  As a result we’re urgently trying to raise money for the Navajo community Tribe in the USA and they DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP.

The Navajo people already took a huge hit last year when over 2000 native jobs were lost as the result of a long time tenant and large power plant closing down. This closure left many local residents already without the ability to pay their bills and no other source of income to manage their farms.  Even though they had just began to rebuild their fragile economy, this Covid 19 Crisis has stopped all ability for them to do so and we fear this time they may not recover.  This fear is based on precedent as during the H1N1 flu epidemic in 2009, Native Americans died at four to five times the rate of other Americans.

The Navajo people have been on ordered government lock down for weeks with emergency weekend curfews in place yet many have NO ACCESS to any money to buy food and supplies and in many homes there is also no electricity or running  water. When combined with the co-morbidities, or pre-existing conditions, that already plague the Navajo people— like heart disease, diabetes and obesity — public health experts worry that difficulty accessing basic needs like food and water is going to compound the crisis.  As of Monday April 30 here are:

·         1,977 positive COVID-19 cases and 62 deaths on the Navajo community, and two deaths in border town cases.

·         A total of 10,216 tests have returned with negative results.

·         This is the third highest death rate per capita globally.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez is warning that the peak may still be weeks away and these numbers show a startling trend for this Native American nation with an on-reservation population of about 174,000.  Currently there is only 12 health care facilities across 27,000 square miles but even though the largest and most populous reservation in the U.S. is doing everything it can to cope with an outbreak ….it is expected to get much worse.  .

Also like Italy, they have one of the largest aging populations in the United States and their elders are EXTREMELY at risk.  Navajo children & grandchildren are unable to visit their elders to bring them medicine and the domestic violence and increased alcohol abuse has become even more rampant than ever before.

Why Is The USA Government Not Assisting?

While “in theory” these Natives may be entitled to the same benefit of Covid Relief benefits offered to other Americans, many however  DO NOT have the means to apply (or qualify) for Unemployment as the majority do not have a postal address or any proper government identification.

While it seems things may be getting a little better for some of us, Native Americans are being left out and forgotten. Don’t let the past repeating itself!  Please give the First Americans a helping hand through this.

Notable Comments Through Media:

“While nearly no one in the country is safe from the coronavirus outbreak, its impact on Indian Country looks different from the rest of the US. Tribal elders are more at risk of Covid-19 because of high rates of diabetes and heart disease. Clean water for proper hand-washing is not accessible in all tribal communities, and overcrowding in Native homes is also common as many are multi-generational, creating social distancing challenges.

Meanwhile, emergency federal funding for tribal health organizations has been delayed within the bureaucracy at US Health and Human Services. Then there are the negative economic effects, with hospitality businesses like casinos — often tribes’ greatest source of income — closing. Indian Country’s resources were stretched thin to begin with, and the coronavirus pandemic is exacerbating the disparities”. Maria Givens on Vox

"Our federal government, since treaties were signed in the late 19th and early 20th century, has broken promise after promise after promise and what we're seeing today is the accumulation of those broken promises and where it has left people." ~ Allison Barlow, director of the Center for American Indian Health, or CAIH, at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health.

How Will The Funds Be Used:

There is currently an estimated 40,000 families living on the  Navajo Reservation.  What they desperately need is Medical Supplies & MONEY.  Depending on the amount raised, these funds would be used to provide much needed medical equipment & supplies.  The remainder and continued fundraising efforts would be focused on providing money directly to the families this crisis has affected.

Our $8,000,000 campaign goal that we set is very modest and hoping to EXCEED this target quickly.  The more money we can raise however,  the better quality of lives we can provide for our First Americans and further rebuild their ravished communities.

We know in these times money is tight for everyone, but if you find it in your hearts to help these amazing people, you will see great things and accomplishments from them one day!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your help!
