A first principles approach to smarter living

Many costly failures result from poorly designed roadways, traffic systems, and auto insurance processes made with the wrong assumptions. To design systems that work as we expect them to, we need more reliable information on our roads, e.g. understanding which intersections are the most dangerous and why. Imagine having insights into all of the most dangerous intersections.

This is where you can help! We hope that you will choose to share with us anonymized road segment data to improve both our Forward Collision Warnings safety feature and our data analysis on road conditions. We have taken multiple measures to ensure that your data is treated as a first-class citizen. In fact, we believe that the mobility space lacks a consumer product that is privacy-first, and we intend on building that product, such that everyone from your insurer to your family member has to go through you first to get access.

Aggregated road insights

To design safer communities, we must understand our current road infrastructure. By studying anonymous road, road safety, and road risk information with our team and industry partners, we can develop insights into the types of improvements we need. We’re not interested in who is driving. Instead, we focus on aggregated, crowdsourced, anonymous information in different locations and scenarios. Solving road safety is a statistical game. To do this, we look at what the industry calls crowdsourced Road Segment Data (RSD) in two ways: regular and image.

Regular RSD

Regular RSD involves using telematics (car motion) and computer vision data to measure traffic density and plot road objects like signs and stop lights, study braking patterns, etc.

Image RSD

Image RSD involves studying the details of a safety situation. We are developing computer simulations where all road artifacts are preserved, but any trace of personal information is removed from image RSD. Driver’s safety alerts rely on this form of road data to adapt to new scenarios - learnings that can extend to the greater mobility industry.

Insured Power

We are rethinking the relationship dynamics between insurers and us. Simply put, safe drivers should pay less. Luckily, forward-thinking insurance companies agree with us. Dash cam users were found to be 33% less likely to have an accident than the average motorist. The results are not surprising as we are generally more aware of road hazards and risks, which is, of course, why we use dash cams. Though for all insurers around the world to adopt dash cam and safe driving discounts, we need to make the cost savings irrefutable. This is our goal.

Claims

There are benefits to adopting dash cams today. Insurance companies usually take 30 to 45 days after accepting a claim to reach a settlement. We want to prove that dash cam footage can reduce the time required to process claims, and relay some of the cost savings to policyholders who use dash cams, which is why we have partnered with Stable Insurance. They offer specialized insurance to rideshare drivers and have even offered a 20% discount on policies, and up to a $0 deductible by running a dash cam.

Consumer Telematics

Many insurers have apps that assess your risk profile as a driver to issue discounts on policies. Discounts for safe driving can be given out without the insurer needing full access to all of our data. We want to create a telematics product that serves you first - by providing complete transparency and full control over what to share. Taking privacy a step further, we intend on aggregating your driving into a single score, Driver Score, for you to share with your insurers. The only inputs in the score relate to how you drive, not your personal information.
