📢 Did you know there’s a Barbie Eco-Leadership Team! 🌳💚
I’d been so excited to learn of that a couple of days back! Serendipitously, Kate Brandt , Chief Sustainability Officer at Google, shared an article recently about how she, along with her friend Melanie Nakagawa (CSO at Microsoft), wrote an opinion piece for Fortune, where they say: “CSO Barbie makes us proud, and a little worried.”
Here's the link to this awesome article:https://lnkd.in/dVCe4Mtf
Here are my 2 cents about a Barbie representing what must be the coolest job on the planet: 🌏💼
1. Long before the Barbie Eco-Leadership Team, Kate was still my role model—not because she’s CSO at Google, but because, as a sustainability enthusiast, I had been following her body of work for quite some time, and the impact she has had is simply impressive. (Also, I just want to be her someday hehe). #ChiefSustainabilityOfficer#InspiringLeadership
2. If there’s a Barbie representing a CSO, then for children who don’t really have the time like me to stalk my heroes, it’s an idea-initiator of the existence of such a powerful role. The fact that, a) women can lead, and b) women can lead in as critical an area as Sustainability (after, of course, understanding why sustainability is critical too...bonus!!), is so cool and such a powerful image to drum up in a child’s mind!

3. If the idea becomes that a CSO is a “woman’s role”, honestly, I have no qualms about it. It’s a powerful, high-impact, no-nonsense role—qualities often associated with men. So if it indeed does become a feminine role, it will only drive toward the dissolution of gender norm-driven job fit. Power and impact will become synonymous with women leaders, yay! 🚀👩🚀 #BreakingGenderRoles#womeninpower#genderequality
4. Lastly, I completely agree with Kate. We need a full-blown normalization where “women in leadership” isn’t called out; it’s just “Leadership making an impact”. But the road to that seems long, and the interim is made just so much better with women leaders, especially ones like Kate. 💪💼
Let's celebrate the impact of women leaders like Kate and Melanie in driving positive change! 🎉💚 #positivechange#leadershipjourney#womenleaders#SustainabilityHeroesMattel, Inc.

Thank you to my dear friend Melanie Nakagawa for joining me in furthering this important discussion about the persistent question we have received around what it means to be a “woman leader” in sustainability.
We are proud of the phenomenon that so many inspiring women (Rebecca Marmot, Ellen Jackowski, and Christiana Figueres to name a few) are serving as CSOs and leaders in our space.
But also just because we are women doing these roles, it does not mean that this is “women’s work” in a pejorative sense.
While there is undoubtedly still more work to be done (for example, in increasing the representation of women from different ethnic, racial, or socio-economic backgrounds in our space), we are also seeing more and more examples of CSOs, including women CSOs, rising to the very top leadership positions in their companies.
So let’s all celebrate this progress, but we also look forward to the day when women’s leadership doesn’t need a special callout because it’s fully normalized within our workplaces and our societies.
We welcome your insights and feedback.

What are the key trends shaping corporate purpose in 2023? This post explores insights that emerged from Benevity Live's corporate purpose event and the ways brands like Toast are continuing to show up when it’s needed most.
- Embracing courage and pitting purpose against polarization
- Adopting a quieter approach to giving
- Building communities within companies through volunteerism
- Advancing DEI through Employee Resource Groups
- Moving from ESG disclosures to reporting on positive outcomes

The political use in corporate annual reports of acronyms DEI (for diversity, equity and inclusion) AND ESG (for environmental, social and governance) as nebulous goals, is rightfully being questioned. Problems of "inclusion" OR "sustainability" remain!

Doubtful about the business case for sustainability?
Unilever is 104th on Forbes 2023 Global 2000 list and continues to prioritize sustainability across the 400+ businesses in their portfolio.
Their Sustainable Brands Portfolio of 28+ companies outperforms the rest of their portfolio and represents an outsize portion of overall revenue growth.

“When we put sustainability at the heart of the company, we are making Unilever future-fit.”
After 38 years at Unilever, Alan Jope will be retiring as CEO at the end of June.
In this interview, he reflects on some of the highlights of his tenure and talks about why it’s critical that businesses are part of the solution to the climate emergency, destruction of nature and rising inequality.
