This was only possible with hard work and dedication by Dr. Sean B. Rourke, director of REACH Nexus at the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions at St. Michael’s Hospital and his team. A great achievement for Helping People Know...
We know Canada is facing a public health emergency when it comes to HIV and Syphilis, especially in the Prairies. That’s why today I’m excited to announce the launch of The Ayaangwaamiziwin Centre: a historic initiative to “test, treat and link to culturally safe care” that will reach and support over 10,000 people at risk for HIV and/or syphilis in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and 1,000+ people in Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories. This project, co-led by MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions and Unity Health Toronto, involved the work of more than 100 Indigenous leaders, HIV advocates and people with lived experiences, researchers, health care workers, medical officers of health and government policy-makers, who first came together over a year ago to find a solution to the HIV and syphilis public health crises in Canada. The Ayaangwaamiziwin Centre – an Ojibwe word for “carefulness and preparedness” – consists of a constellation of organizations working together to provide access to testing, preventative care, harm reduction and treatment/care for HIV and syphilis in underserved and remote communities across the regions. A sincere thank you to all our funders including Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada Indigenous Services Canada | Services aux Autochtones Canada Staples Canada through the #EventheOdds partnership, The Jackman Foundation and many others for making this happen. “Indigenous-led, culturally-grounded, trauma-informed, and community-oriented health services are an essential part of reducing the spread of sexually transmitted and blood borne infections in First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities,” said Dr. Tom Wong, Chief Medical Officer of Public Health, Indigenous Services Canada. “We will continue to work alongside partners and leaders to support safe spaces for Indigenous Peoples to seek holistic care in their healing journey.” READ MORE: https://lnkd.in/eZUAcXuT Public Health Agency of Canada | Agence de la santé publique du Canada Health Canada | Santé Canada CAAN Communities, Alliances & Networks University of Manitoba University of Saskatchewan University of Alberta MedMira Inc.

We are excited to announce the launch of The Ayaangwaamiziwin Centre: a ground-breaking initiative to “test, treat and link to culturally safe care” 10,000+ people at risk for HIV and/or syphilis in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and 2,500+ people in Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories. Co-led by Dr. Sean B. Rourke director of REACH Nexus at MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions Unity Health Toronto, this landmark health care initiative involved more than 100 Indigenous leaders, HIV advocates, researchers, health care workers and people with lived experiences, including HIV, who first came together over a year ago to find a solution to the HIV and syphilis public health crises in Canada. The Ayaangwaamiziwin Centre – an Ojibwe word for “carefulness and preparedness” – consists of a constellation of organizations working together to provide access to testing, preventative care, harm reduction and treatment for HIV and syphilis in underserved and remote communities across the regions. “Indigenous-led, culturally-grounded, trauma-informed, and community-oriented health services are an essential part of reducing the spread of sexually transmitted and blood borne infections in First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities,” said Dr. Tom Wong, Chief Medical Officer of Public Health, Indigenous Services Canada | Services aux Autochtones Canada. A sincere thank you to all our funders including Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), Staples Canada through the #EventheOdds partnership, the Jackman Foundation and many others for making this happen. “HIV and infectious syphilis are public health emergencies in Canada, sweeping across communities, particularly in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The more people we can reach to test, diagnose and treat with HIV and syphilis, the faster we can help end these health crises,” said Dr. Rourke. “This is a historic Canadian health partnership – involving the community, health care system and public health sectors.” READ MORE: https://lnkd.in/e6px52QD Public Health Agency of Canada | Agence de la santé publique du Canada University of Manitoba University of Saskatchewan University of Alberta

Did you know MedMira's HIV rapid test was the very first HIV rapid test approved in Canada. A groundbreaking first step to provide a fast and reliable solution. The acceptance to use rapid tests for critical screening has significantly increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic AND with the amazing work by Dr. Rourke and the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions and St. Michael's Hospital. This would have not been possible without the support by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada, the St. Michael’s Foundation and the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR). This has encouraged us to continue with developing and working on regulatory approvals for more essential tests here in Canada. We are grateful for the support by Dr. Rourke and his team to Help People Know…

This week marks the launch of the first ever Sex Plus Week—a reimagined and expanded version of what was formerly known as Sexual Health Week. Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights has been championing sexual and reproductive health for many year, and this new campaign goes beyond awareness to #celebrate the many ways sexual health connects to overall well-being. At Trimedic, we’ve been following the hard work their team has been doing, and we encourage Canadian patients and providers to explore the fantastic resources they’ve made available.
