The United Nations has recognized the importance of access to clean water and sanitation as one of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 6 aims to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Meanwhile, SDG 7 seeks to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. By merging these two goals, we can enhance access to clean and safe drinking water through the use of solar-powered water filters.

How the bottled water industry is masking the global water crisis Bottled water is one of the world’s most popular beverages, and its industry is making the most of it. Since the millennium, the world has advanced significantly towards the goal of safe water for all. In 2020, 74 per cent of humanity had access to safe water. This is 10 per cent more than two decades ago. But that still leaves two billion people without access to safe drinking water. NEWS! Ecolab, a global sustainability leader offering water solutions and services, announced findings from the inaugural Ecolab Watermark™ Study. The global consumer research examined the state of water stewardship through water’s importance, usage, connection to climate and responsibility among key consumer populations around the world. By 2030, the planet is set to face a 56% water deficit, according to the World Resources Institute, and 1.6 billion people will lack safely managed drinking water, according to the United Nations. It’s amid this pressing water crisis that Ecolab developed the Ecolab Watermark Study to identify trends, help educate and generate action across industry stakeholders, specifically those in Asia/Pacific, China, Europe, India/Middle East/Africa (IMEA), Latin America and the United States (U.S.). Among its global findings, the Ecolab Watermark Study uncovered several critical water-related trends: Access to clean and safe water is a paramount concern for consumers in every region. Latin America (92%), China (85%) and the U.S. (81%) have the highest percentage of consumers who are more concerned about access to clean and safe water than other climate-related issues, such as pollution or climate change. Consumers hold governments and businesses most responsible for water conservation. However, consumers do not believe these leaders care enough about their impact on water or climate change. This was most pronounced in the U.S., Europe, Latin America and Asia/Pacific, where between 42% and 46% of people believed their leaders cared. Consumers believe that industry has no clear plan to address water scarcity, despite the perceived responsibility and importance. This concern is most evident in China (82%), Latin America (78%), and IMEA (78%), but also noticeably visible in Europe (66%), the U.S. (65%) and Asia/Pacific (60%). Today is the last day of World Water Week*, the theme of which has been 'Seeds of Change: Innovative Solutions for a Water-Wise World’. The headline is that over two billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water [1] but many conversations this week have been connected to global supply chains in some way - either positive or negative - particularly through the theme’s emphasis on collective action. Food and Beverage supply chains are most often in the center of this debate. Sarah Dankens shared a case study in which Danone partnered with other private and public organizations in Mexico to help strawberry farmers reduce water usage by 50% (https://lnkd.in/eykqy6Dy). Diageo's WASH project in Mexico was also highlighted (https://lnkd.in/eryBT6rV). Mexico also offers a case study of how local governments will step in when the needs of industry and the local population are at odds - the beer industry being an extreme example: https://lnkd.in/emeG3x6X But it’s not just F&B; almost all industrial processes need water. It can take as much as 2,200 gallons of Ultra Pure Water to make a semiconductor chip (it takes up to 1.6 gallons of municipal water to produce one gallon of UPW) and fabs are being built in areas with water scarcity. More here on the challenges in Arizona: https://lnkd.in/evYrzNHU. A study by the United Nations University (UNU) of 109 countries has found that the growth of the bottled water industry is hindering efforts to provide reliable drinking water for all. The report argues that the highly profitable and fast-growing bottled water industry is masking the failure of public systems to supply reliable drinking water for all. Bottled water corporations exploit surface water and aquifers — typically at very low cost — and sell it for 150 to 1,000 times more than the same unit of municipal tap water. The UNU report says that the bottled water industry continues to grow and is expected to double to $500 billion worldwide this decade. It is argued that the industry undermines progress towards safe water projects, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, by redirecting attention to a less reliable and less affordable option. With global progress toward the target of safe drinking water supply so far off-track, expansion of the bottled water market essentially works against making headway or at least slows it down, adversely affecting investments and long-term public water infrastructure. However, progress has been slow, and the challenge remains enormous. 3️⃣ Data centers, the backbone of our digital world, are estimated to consume billions of liters of water annually. Yes, you read that right! The very technology that powers our information age is thirsty. 4️⃣ Traditional cooling methods in data centers, such as cooling towers, often rely on large volumes of freshwater for heat dissipation. The evaporation and drift losses contribute to significant water consumption. 5️⃣ As an environmental engineering professional, I can't help but mention the water-intensive process used to train cutting-edge AI models. ChatGPT, for example, required vast amounts of data and computational resources, indirectly contributing to water consumption during its training. But fear not! There's hope on the horizon: 1️⃣ The data center industry is actively pursuing innovative solutions to reduce water consumption. Advanced cooling technologies like direct liquid cooling and air economizers offer promising alternatives that can slash or eliminate water usage. 2️⃣ Renewable energy integration in data centers further contributes to sustainability, ensuring that the digital revolution doesn't come at the expense of our water resources. 3️⃣ Collaborative efforts between NGOs, technology companies, and environmental experts can create a platform for dialogue and solutions. With today being World Water Day, I’d like to share the latest with you on how Tetra Pak is helping work towards a water-secure world. But before we plunge into it, how does water security fit into our work? ⚗️According to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, nature is deteriorating at rates unprecedented in human history, largely due to human activity. In recognising the urgency to halt and restore nature loss and achieve a water-secure world, we’re committed to taking action for nature. In fact, it’s one of the focus areas of our sustainability agenda. So, here’s the latest on our water-related work – boiled down to three recent developments: 🏆 Last month, after reporting data on water security for the first time, we received an A- score from CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project). This helped land us in the CDP leadership band once again. And we’re the only company in the carton packaging sector in the 2023 leadership band across all the CDP areas of disclosure. Hats off to Martin Carlsson who leads our work on water including the reporting exercise which is not as easy as it might sound 🎯 As part of our Approach to Nature, we now have water-specific targets for our own operations, our products and services as well as the goods and services we purchase. Here are a few: By 2025, 100% of our high water-impact suppliers report on water use and quality. Achieve a 35% water withdrawal reduction across our production sites by 2030 as compared to 2019. Achieve a 50% reduction of water use in best practice lines (packaging and processing) by 2030 as compared to 2019 💦 We’re already moving the needle in this area. Here’s one example: With the Tetra Pak® Water Filtering Station, one of our customers in Spain (a beverage producer) now recycles up to 95% of the water used by its filling machines.
