Ruth Darlene Patrick, Founder of WomenSV, on Key Imperatives for Serving Communities in Crisis

ATLANTA, GA / ACCESSWIRE / May 12, 2023 / Nonprofits serve a myriad of community causes and are often on the front lines of critical issues and situations, requiring them to be well-equipped to serve communities and people in crisis and understand their unique needs. These organizations play a crucial role in educating and raising awareness among professional providers in legal, medical, and social services throughout the community and connecting those in need with valuable support and resources. However, when working with communities and people in crisis, the stakes are high, especially when abuse is involved. For organizations serving those escaping and healing from abusive relationships, it is imperative that a commitment to integrity, care, and accountability be central to the way the nonprofit engages with the community and its clients.

Training and Certification

One of the most critical imperatives for nonprofits serving communities in crisis is ensuring that staff has proper training and certification. Working in the field of domestic violence can be emotionally and mentally challenging, and staff must be adequately prepared to handle these situations and be an effective resource for survivors. Victims of traumatic experiences and abuse often have unique challenges and need to feel both cared for and empowered. Ensuring that those working with clients have the professional training and experience necessary to properly address survivors' situations and support their well-being is of paramount importance.

Ruth Darlene, Executive Director and Founder of WomenSV, a nonprofit focused on supporting survivors of domestic and coercive abuse, emphasizes the importance of staff training, saying, "The right training is crucial because it provides our team with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively support survivors of domestic violence. It also helps them to recognize the early signs of domestic violence and respond appropriately. That's why every one of our staff members who works directly with survivors is required to complete the state certification in domestic violence advocacy."

Fiscal Responsibility

Alongside certification and training, fiscal responsibility is another hallmark of effective nonprofits serving communities and people in need. It's essential for nonprofit organizations to be fiscally responsible and ensure they have the resources to continue serving individuals and communities that need support. This requires strategic planning and careful financial management by following a budget, regularly evaluating their programs, and ensuring that their resources are being allocated efficiently and meeting the needs of the people and communities it serves.

Not only does fiscal responsibility and transparency ensure that the nonprofit can attract donors and continue its important work, but it also helps the organization forge important relationships with civic and professional entities as it develops a reputation for delivering on its mission.

"As a non-profit organization, no one is in it for the money, but financial stability is important to provide security and trust within your staff that will reflect that back to the communities you service," says Ruth Darlene. "Being a financially responsible organization signals to the community that you are serious about the work you do."

"We never charge for our client services because we believe it's the right of everyone to be free and safe in their own home, and because of the severe financial abuse that many survivors experience. That's why we rely on donations to support our work and mission. The funding we receive is dedicated to increasing support for the survivors we serve. We offer three different support groups, ongoing safety planning, community education and access to secure technology. We also work with survivors individually to help them throughout their journey, from realizing they are in an abusive relationship to planning their escape and dealing with the impact."

Innovative Services and Approaches

Innovation is crucial when serving communities in crisis, as traditional approaches may not always be effective. Nonprofits must be open to new ideas and constantly evolve, implementing new services and approaches to best support survivors.

For example, WomenSV has developed a unique program that offers individual consults, support groups, education, and connection to resources for survivors of domestic violence to help them build self-esteem and gain the confidence they need to take control of their lives, with tailored plans for every individual survivor situation. "Another way that we stay on top of new resources and support approaches is through partnership and enlisting the perspective of subject-matter experts," noted Ruth Darlene. "At WomenSV, we have invited various professionals including cybersecurity experts, private investigators, wellness coaches, and members of the police department to share their experiences and ensure our services meet the needs of those escaping and rebuilding from abuse."

Resolute Commitment

Serving communities in crisis requires a resolute commitment to the cause. Nonprofits must be dedicated to their mission and remain committed to it, even when facing a variety of challenges and roadblocks. This commitment should be clearly reflected in their policies, programs, and services.

According to Ruth Darlene, "At WomenSV, we believe in the fundamental right of every person to live in peace, safety, and freedom in their own home. This resolute commitment drives us to do whatever it takes to help survivors of domestic violence."

For many survivors and victims of abuse, nonprofit organizations help them chart the path from trauma to triumph. However, to deliver the guidance, service, and care that helps people rise from a crisis, proper training, fiscal responsibility, innovation, and commitment are absolutes.
