As the Navy’s flagship technical graduate institution, the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has a 115-year history in naval STEM education. NPS faculty and students also devote their time and talent to local STEM programs including the school’s annual Rapid Innovation Design Challenge – a program for Monterey County high schools to develop real-world solutions to issues with naval applications.   This year’s challenge was developed with support from the Office of Naval Research, in collaboration with industry and technology experts, with a focus on autonomy and its use in creating two types of platforms – one for ocean and atmospheric measurement during storm events, the other for monitoring coastal water quality.   Dr. Mara Orescanin of the NPS Oceanography department, who initiated and led the Rapid Innovation Design Challenge, hosted the winning teams at an award ceremony at nearby Moss Landing Marine Labs. The teams were awarded prizes up to $2,000 for their schools, sponsored by the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation.   “We started three years ago with a program to try and encourage hands-on STEM learning through an iterative process whereby you guys are allowed to try things that don't have a solution to them,” said Orescanin, speaking to the gathering of students and faculty. “You have to think outside the box, you have to learn how to fail and how to learn from that failure to iterate on the next design. And this is what real scientists and engineers do.”   Following the ceremony, teachers and students had a unique opportunity to tour the Western Flyer, a restored fishing boat once used by John Steinbeck, which now has new life as a STEM education and research platform run by the Western Flyer Foundation. Assisting with the tours was NPS student U.S. Navy Lt. j.g. Caroline Kelly, who volunteers her time with other NPS students as part of an Independent Study Course at NPS on STEM Outreach Projects developed by Orescanin’s colleague, Dr. David Ortiz-Suslow. - Read the full story and see who won! https://lnkd.in/dzvxSq9m - Learn more about STEM internships at NPS: https://lnkd.in/gGb_QJgv - NPS Oceanography department: https://lnkd.in/g8BPRah US Navy | United States Marine Corps | Naval STEM | Office of the Secretary of the Navy | Office of the Chief of Naval Operations | Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering | Department of the Navy Research, Development, and Acquisition (RD&A) | Naval Postgraduate School Foundation & Alumni Association #STEM #NavalSTEM #STEMeducation
