Welcome to Alberta, Deep Sky! Great news today that Deep Sky has chosen the town of Innisfail, Alberta for their carbon removal innovation and commercialization centre. Known as Deep Sky Labs, the facility will be used to pilot multiple direct air capture (DAC) technologies - helping to validate and optimize the performance of DAC so technologies can be scaled up and deployed at commercial scale as soon as possible. The test facility is expected to be operational early next year, beginning to remove 30,000 tonnes of CO2 over a 10-year period.   The location was chosen based on Alberta's exceptional geologic storage resources and Innisfail's growing reputation as a green energy and cleantech hub. The project is estimated to generate high-quality jobs for 80 workers during construction, 15 jobs for ongoing operations, and provide a $110-million boost to the local economy over the next decade.   The Deep Sky team are also advancing two CO2 storage projects in Quebec - pre-feasibility studies are now underway to assess the geologic potential for permanent CO2 storage in deep saline aquifers in Becancour and using in-situ mineralization in Thetford Mines. The Journey of PEACH DACquiri Inc.: Innovating Carbon Removal Technology and Alkalinity Everywhere. PEACH DACquiri began with two visionary professors (Steve Larter & Venkataraman Thangadurai) at the University of Calgary in geochemistry and electrochemistry, who were exploring novel battery systems for use in the energy transition, including trying to turn oilfields into giant air-oil flow batteries. That didn’t work as a scaleable technology but instead the notions evolved into a novel approach for CO2 removal in the ocean and on-land. In 2020, a dedicated PhD student (now Dr. Prathap I V S) joined to develop battery electrodes compatible with seawater electrolytes and with a multidisciplinary team (Benjamin Tutolo, Md Golam Kibria, PhD, P.Eng and Anna-Maria Hubert), with experts in ocean chemistry, engineering, and environmental law, supported this groundbreaking project and an active patent application ensued. The process uses electrochemical cells to selectively move ions between saline water masses and works in the ocean or with industrial brines. Our efforts were recognized with support from the Scotiabank Net-Zero Phase-I fund in 2022, allowing us to expand our team with a postdoctoral researcher (Dr. ARTHI GOPALAKRISHNAN). She contributed to the extended version of the PEACH cell, which features a revolutionary design for electrochemical CDR. Together, we simplified the electrochemical CO2 removal process and published our first paper on Ca-ion batteries in 2023. In April 2023, we founded our startup, receiving further support from Scotiabank (Thank You!). Our project gained recognition through university newsletters and was supported by accelerator programs like @Evolve2innovate, Aeir, and Cenovus EDI by important and insightful mentors (Paula Berton, Adam Pidlisecky, Raissa Espiritu, Bharat Maheshwari). In 2024, Prathap successfully defended his PhD thesis; we welcomed our first summer intern, Nora Keegan, and began collaborating with the Avatar Innovations Industry CDR team -“BrineTech” (Kaleigh MacDonald, Joshua West, Chin Sian Lew, Thomas Connell, Sedigheh Mahdavi) on an oilfield brine CDR pilot project design. After 8 months, we demonstrated that PEACH technology works with oilfield brine, BrineTech-subsequently winning the best pitch award at Avatar Innovations Demo Day in November 2024(congrats BrineTech!). We thank the Innovate Calgary Jelena Matic for the help and support with IP. We’re now part of the CDL 2024/25 climate stream cohort, and PEACH DACquiri is poised to scale up and contribute significantly to the fight against climate change. Alkalinity Everywhere is our motto-on land and sea, it provides a low energy route to secure and scaleable CO2 capture and storage. ♻️ 🌎

📢 Regulatory Bulletin, August Edition Released The federal government announced an investment of up to $137 million from the Canada Growth Fund to Svante, contributing to its new carbon capture and removal filter manufacturing facility currently under construction.   Other key features include an announcement from the BC Energy Regulator (BC-ER) regarding the completion of the Halfway River First Nation (HRFN) Landscape Planning Pilot (LPP), aimed to balance Treaty rights, environmental restoration, and responsible energy development. Additionally, BC-ER released guidance for energy companies following the release of the Gundy Complex HV1-C Plan, developed under the Blueberry River First Nations Implementation Agreement.   As Alberta continues to experience drought and water shortages throughout the province, updates to the provincial Drought Response Plan have been released. Researchers at the Technion’s Schulich Faculty of Chemistry have developed a groundbreaking chemical process called triazenolysis, which transforms alkenes—common organic compounds like petroleum—into multifunctional amines. These amines are essential raw materials for polymers, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural chemicals. Inspired by ozonolysis, a process that forms carbon-oxygen bonds, triazenolysis instead creates carbon-nitrogen bonds by cleaving carbon-carbon bonds in olefins. This innovation expands the toolkit for producing materials with wide-ranging industrial and research applications, offering a new method to synthesize valuable compounds. Credit Where It's Electrochemically Due When my UBC electrochemistry professor, Elod Gyenge, taught us reaction kinetics in 2011, he introduced the Butler-Erdey-Grúz-Volmer equation. He emphasized that the contribution of the young Erdey-Grúz was not properly recognized at the time, which is why the equation is still widely referred to as the Butler-Volmer equation today. 12 Years later, I heard from my colleagues who had just taken the same UBC course that Professor Gyenge still shares this story in his lectures. It’s a testament to his dedication to giving credit where it’s due. This story has stuck with me—not just as a piece of electrochemical history but as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging the contributions of all team members. I strive to follow Prof. Gyenge's example in my work. When I present important experimental results to a wide audience in my company, I make it a point to highlight the contributions of my team. Whether it’s collecting data, performing analyses, or troubleshooting experiments, each team member plays a vital role in achieving success. After a long period of hibernation under review, happy to note that our work on exploring oxyfluoride compositions as possible cathodes for sodium ion batteries is finally out on #ChemMater American Chemical Society. Led by Debolina Deb, we systematically scan through oxygen-rich and fluorine-rich oxyfluoride perovskites as possible sodium cathodes, via voltage, stability, and mobility calculations, and identify 4 fluorine-rich compositions to be potentially useful. Canada's largest renewable diesel (RD) producer, Braya Renewable Fuels, is considering idling its 18,000 b/d biorefinery in Newfoundland before year-end, citing weak margins and growing uncertainty around U.S. biofuels policy. Despite earlier plans to double capacity and add SAF production, the strategy shift reflects the looming expiration of the $1 USD/gal 40A blenders tax credit, which is set to be replaced in January with the 45Z tax credit exclusive to U.S. producers. The situation is further strained by recent updates to California's LCFS program, which limits credits for fuels derived from soybean oil—key components of Braya's feedstock mix. EIR anticipates continued downward pressure on RD margins and subsequent plant shut-ins in response to near-medium weakness in RIN and LCFS credit prices.
