Did you know that kidney disease can be genetic? 🧬 APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD) is more common in people of West and Central African descent, including those of African, Afro-Caribbean, and Latino heritage. If you have this genetic mutation, your risk of kidney disease increases, and it can progress much faster than other forms of kidney disease. As someone affected by an unknown cause of kidney disease, I know how important it is to learn about these genetic factors and take control of our health. Early diagnosis can help protect your kidneys and potentially prevent kidney failure. That’s why I’m working with the American Kidney Fund to raise awareness about AMKD and encourage you to talk to your doctor about genetic testing. 👉 Visit KidneyFund.org/APOL1aware to learn more about AMKD and how to take charge of your kidney health. Let’s start a conversation and raise awareness together. #KidneyDisease #APOL1 #AMKD #AKFAmbassador #AfricanAmericanHealth #GeneticTesting #EarlyDetection #KidneyDiseaseAwareness American Kidney Fund

Excited to announce my partnership with the American Kidney Fund this month for AMKD Awareness Day on April 29. AMKD Awareness Day is an important opportunity to spread the word about how genetics can impact kidney health. Black Americans and people of West or Central African descent are more likely to carry APOL1 gene mutations, which can increase the risk of developing APOL1 Mediated Kidney Disease, understanding your risk can be a powerful first step in protecting your kidney health. Join me in raising awareness and empowering our communities to take charge of their health. American Kidney Fund

Last week, AKF hosted a session on APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD) at the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACK SOCIAL WORKERS conference in Richmond, VA. The session covered the importance of family health history and the influence of social determinants of health in assessing the risks associated with kidney disease. Speakers Andrea Moore, LMSW, Anika Lucas Sylvester MD, MTS and AKF Board Member Patrick O. Gee, Sr., PhD., JLC discussed strategies for implementing culturally appropriate methodologies and fostering multidisciplinary healthcare teams to improve kidney health outcomes within African communities. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this session, and thank you for helping AKF raise awareness and educate people about the impact of AMKD! #APOL1Aware

Genetic testing is the only way to know if someone has APOL1 gene variants. Deciding whether to have a genetic test is a personal decision, but it can help someone know their risk for AMKD. AKF's guide can help your patients understand the risks and benefits of genetic testing. Download and share AKF's "AMKD: Connect with a genetic counselor" guide: https://bit.ly/44uzlTS #APOL1Aware
