In 1972, a young Samuel Alito wrote in his Princeton University yearbook autobiography that he hoped one day “to eventually warm a seat on the Supreme Court.” Five decades later, Alito not only sits on the nation’s highest bench authoring landmark conservative opinions, but he is also the second-richest of its nine justices. Forbes estimates Alito’s net worth to be $10 million, behind only Chief Justice John Roberts ($25 million) and well ahead of, say, Neil Gorsuch ($8 million), who raked in millions in private practice, or Sonia Sotomayor ($5 million), who wrote books that made her wealthy. How is it that Alito, who has worked for the government since the 1970s and never signed a book deal, became so well off?
