About us

Hexxcell mission is to bring digital innovation to industrial thermal systems. We combine Artificial Intelligence (AI) with physics-based models and deep domain knowledge to monitoring, design and maintenance of heat exchanger networks. Our hybrid digital twins are used by refineries and petrochemical plants worldwide to increase production, cut energy consumption and CO2 emissions, optimally manage operations and maintenance. Hexxcell spun-off from Imperial College London in 2013. Ever since, we have developed our technology in large scale multidisciplinary R&D projects in collaboration with oil majors and validated extensively on their plants. We are now an independent private company based in Central London and a proud team of chemical, mechanical and process systems engineers with deep knowledge of heat transfer, mathematical modelling, artificial intelligence and a knack for data science.

  • In our previous posts, we have explained the causes of fouling in heat exchangers and how to identify the dominant fouling mechanism. However, fouling is not inevitable: there are several strategies that can mitigate fouling in heat exchangers and, in certain cases, almost eliminate it. In this new series of posts, our Heat Exchanger Consultant Himanshu Joshi will explain the hardware technologies that can minimise fouling in functioning heat exchangers handling single-phase liquids or gases. These techniques may not necessarily address the root cause of fouling, but they can help reduce the fouling rate within the heat exchanger. Some of these are only suitable for the tube side, while others can be applied to both sides.   • The Heat Transfer & Fluid Separation in the Energy Transition conference, organised by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE)’s Fluid Separations Special Interest Group and the Heat Transfer Society, was an incredible opportunity to engage with industry leaders, researchers, and experts working at the forefront of heat transfer and fluid separation technologies. Our Head of Digital Innovation, Niccolo Le Brun, presented our latest study on hybrid-AI digital twins, demonstrating how the combination of physics-based models and AI can optimise the performance of both heat exchangers and separators, enabling data-driven cleaning schedules that maximise efficiency and reduce downtime. The discussions that followed highlighted the growing importance of hybrid-AI solutions in improving efficiency, sustainability, and reliability in the chemical industry.
