As we celebrate Black History Month, we at the Foundation affirm our commitment to dismantling a belief in a hierarchy of human value, with a focus on racial equity. Our work to create a just and equitable Minnesota where all communities and people thrive starts within our organization. "If you ever want to know if an organization is authentic in its equity work, the people you should talk to are those who have historically been sidelined, such as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and disabled communities," says Chief Operating Officer Nadege Souvenir. "For me, it's significant that our BIPOC staff feel a sense of belonging and see themselves in our work; it reflects all the work that we've made over the last few years. I think it is one of the strongest markers of our DEI progress." This February, let's reflect on the rich tapestry of Black history that is woven into the very fabric of America. Black history is American history, and it's a story of resilience, triumphs, and contributions that have shaped our nation. The theme of Black History Month 2024 is "African Americans and the Arts" spanning the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more. Beginning with "Negro spirituals" and blues music that brought solace to a life of enslavement in the South, other later popular forms of African-American music emerged in urban jazz in New Orleans and Chicago. This month is vital to remember and honor Black Americans who have left their mark on American history. The Mayor’s Office of Equity and Inclusion Cabinet: Racial Justice along with the Black Employee Network, Black Male Advancement, the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ+ Advancement, Women's Advancement, Age Strong, Veterans Services and other departments will host several events during Black History Month. By recognizing and embracing the diversity woven into our history, we forge a path toward a future that is more embracing and inclusive.
