As we wrap up celebrations for #BlackHistoryMonth, we want you to meet Dexter Thompson, Hardship Program Director for the KFC Foundation. For him, it’s important to stay connected to his culture and share his roots with his daughter. “I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia before moving to Louisville, Kentucky when I was 14 years old. It’s important for me to stay connected to my roots when I go back to Georgia to visit my grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. My wife and daughter always join me on these trips so that I can show my daughter that her roots are not just planted in one place.”

My social feeds have been filled with coverage of Macaulay Culkin receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. ⭐️ If you're familiar with Culkin's career, you know he was a child in the films he's most known for. In fact, the last major motion picture he stared in was released nearly 20 years ago in 2004. Yet, he received a star on the iconic boulevard last week. My point is that it's never too late to celebrate your wins, big or small. Should he have received the star when he was younger? Probably. Does receiving it now make it any less credible? Absolutely not. He did the work, and to this day, it's impacted millions of people (Yes, I've already watched Home Alone once this holiday season). If this acknowledgment of his career hadn't occurred recently, we would have been left thinking he already had a Hollywood star. With reporting on all things 2023 fresh on everyone's minds, remember to acknowledge *all* your achievements. Because if you don't, how will we know to celebrate them with you? From hitting the professional goals you hoped you would to achieving milestones you didn't plan for, but you accomplished them anyway. No win is too tiny, and you deserve to celebrate today and every day. Now, happy reporting season, ya filthy animals. 😉🎄 #MacaulayCulkin #CareerGoals #YearInReview #ProfessionalGrowth

The Hand me down crown. The upkeep of the crown by on hand to the next. Thanks to #Edgarchase and the chase family. Legacy holds immense importance as it is translated and passed down from one generation to the next. It encompasses the values, wisdom, accomplishments, and traditions that we leave behind. I serve a bridge between the past, present, and future. This allows us to connect with our ancestors, learn from their experiences, and understand our roots. By preserving and passing down our legacy, we ensure that the knowledge and lessons learned by previous generations continue to shape and guide us. It provides a sense of identity and belonging. It gives us a framework to understand who we are, where we come from, and the values that define us. It instills pride and heritage, fostering a deeper connection to our roots and a stronger sense of purpose. traditions, rituals, and customs are carried forward, preventing them from fading away. This preservation of cultural heritage allows future generations to learn about and appreciate their own heritage, fostering a sense of cultural diversity and understanding.

Black-owned BUZZ Coffeehouse on Historic Cascade: closing. Black woman-owned Hodgepodge Coffeehouse on Moreland Ave: closing. Two places I’ve spent years sipping delicious coffee, completing big projects (including my dissertation), and building community announced they’ll be shutting down in the same week due to rent spikes. Our team at Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative has been tracking and hitting the pavement to listen to Black business owners facing displacement and one thing is clear: the displacement of Black-owned businesses is rendered nearly invisible in Atlanta policy discussions. We need better policy tools to preserve affordability for these vital community wealth building and job creating centers in our neighborhoods, but there are far fewer tools and investments in this area when compared to housing affordability. Moreso, there are more tools and policies in place to accelerate the displacement of these businesses than there are to stop it. We look forward to sharing more of what we’re learning. But this is unacceptable.
