Dr. Edward Sykes leads the Centre for Mobile Innovation (CMI), established at Sheridan College to create innovative solutions to health care problems in collaboration with industry and community partners. CMI research efforts focus on developing cutting-edge mobile health technology that will introduce significant savings, efficiencies and improved treatment within Canada’s health care industry. Sykes and his co-developers are leading technological innovations that will enable health care professionals to make rapid and informed decisions from within a hospital or from remote locations. A collaboration with virtual health care company Cloud DX has produced the Clinic of the Future system, which uses mixed reality to display a patient’s real-time vitals, test results and medical history in a visually rich and intuitive interface. Other CMI projects include a low-cost digital point-of-care monitoring system for childhood pneumonia, an automatic pain diagnosis system that employs 3D facial analysis and deep learning, fall prediction and prevention systems, and more. The innovations developed by Sykes and his collaborators will make it easier for health workers to identify medical emergencies and quickly make informed decisions that could save the lives of patients.

In recognition of significant advancements to mobile health technology resulting from partnerships with industry, Dr. Edward Sykes is awarded a 2020 NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation.
