15 MILLION KIDS ARE IN POVERTY ACROSS THE U.S., WITH NEARLY 1 MILLION IN POVERTY IN LOS ANGELES.

MANY SCHOOL DISTRICTS HAVE ELIMINATED OR REDUCED INVESTMENT IN ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS INCLUDING SPORTS.

MANY SCHOOL DISTRICTS MANDATE PE FOR ONLY 1-2 DAYS PER WEEK AND MANY NO LONGER OFFER RECESS IN SCHOOLS.

BLACK AND LATINX YOUTH ARE 2X AS LIKELY TO RESIDE IN AREAS WITH SUBPAR PARK SPACE PER CAPITA.

KIDS FROM HOUSEHOLDS BELOW $25K ARE 5X LESS LIKELY TO PARTICIPATE IN SPORTS.

80 PERCENT OF YOUNG PEOPLE, MANY POOR, DO NOT MEET FEDERAL GUIDELINES FOR DAILY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.

THE PURPOSE OF PLAY EQUITY FUND

A CRISIS HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT.

  • KIDS IN POOR COMMUNITIES HAVE AN OBESITY RATE THAT IS NEARLY 2X HIGHER THAN KIDS FROM AFFLUENT COMMUNITIES.
  • POOR STUDENTS WERE 5X MORE LIKELY TO DROP OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL THAN STUDENTS FROM HIGH-INCOME FAMILIES.
  • DEEPER NEGATIVE IMPACTS IN COMMUNITIES OF COLOR: BLACK AND LATINX YOUTH HAVE THE HIGHEST RATES OF STRESS, ANXIETY, AND DEPRESSION.
  • LATINA GIRLS HAVE THE LOWEST PARTICIPATION RATES.
  • BLACK MALE STUDENTS ARE 2.5 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL AND HAVE HIGHER RATES OF JUVENILE INCARCERATION.
