Ex-49ers coach Mike Singletary out after two years at Texas high school

Mike Singletary has had a number of jobs since his days as the 49ers' coach. The latter part of his coaching resume includes three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and one with the Los Angeles Rams in 2016, his last in the NFL.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker more recently coached the AAF’s Memphis Express in 2019, during the minor league’s only season of existence. What most don’t know is he was actually coaching two teams at the time.

The Houston native was back in his home state leading Trinity Christian Academy-Addison at the same time. He led that school’s football program starting in 2018, but now he is out after two years.

Singletary has moved on from the program, the Dallas Morning News’ Callie Caplan reported Thursday. Trinity Christian-Addison boys athletic director Donald English told Caplan that Singletary formally stepped away in December. Singletary has been focused on motivational speaking and consulting enterprises, English said.

Victories were hard to come by with Singletary at the helm. Trinity Christian-Addison was 1-21 under Singletary, with an 0-11 record last season.

Singletary was coaching high school and Memphis’ AAF squad at the same time in 2019 in an unusual arrangement documented by the Morning News. The Express finished 2-6, and Johnny Manziel and Christian Hackenberg were quarterbacks on that squad.

Trinity Christian-Addison is a school of approximately 1,500 students regarded as a quality private school. The football program has had past success but struggled in recent seasons, including the year prior to Singletary’s arrival. As a reminder, high-school football success is often determined by an influx of talent in a particular period and can ebb and flow even in quality programs.

Singletary became 49ers interim head coach in 2008 after Mike Nolan was fired. He had the interim tag removed and was the team's coach from 2009 through 2010.
