Abstract: Over the years, the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) has generated large volumes of project-related data, including lake sediment geochemistry data. To meet increasing demand from clients for easily accessible data in a digital format, lake sediment geochemical data were compiled into a database. The “Lake Geochemistry of Ontario—2019” (LakeGeochemON—2019) is a Microsoft® Access® database compilation. This compilation is based on data compiled from 45 digital data releases (Miscellaneous Release—Data (MRDs)) published by the OGS between 1995 and 2018. Most of the compiled data have associated Open File Reports (OFRs), which were originally published in hard-copy format and are also available for download from GeologyOntario. It is intended that this compilation will be updated annually such that this compilation provides a single source for digital OGS lake geochemical data.

It is important to note that this compilation is “not” intended to be used as a standalone product and should be used in conjunction with the referenced original reports (Miscellaneous Release—Data and Open File Reports) in order to assist in understanding the significance of the geochemical data and relevance to mineral exploration.

The compressed (LakeGeochemON-2019.zip) download file provides 1) Lake Geochemistry data as a relational database (Microsoft® Access® 2016 (.accdb) file); 2) geospatial data (ESRI® shape file) providing the outline of each survey area; and 3) for user convenience, examples of several Ontario-wide data queries (exported as Microsoft® Excel® (.xlsx) files). Geospatial data are provided in North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) geographic co-ordinate system using decimal degrees. A readme file (that explains the content) is provided.

Purpose: The purpose of the Lake Geochemistry Compilation of Ontario is to provide clients with easily accessible, easy to locate and up-to-date digital information on the lake geochemistry of Ontario. The aim is to augment, and eventually supersede, a previous OGS digital compilation (MRD 153: “Ontario Geochemistry and Indicator Mineral Database”) published in 2005. This database of lake geochemistry is useful for plotting maps. It is also a useful data set within which to do practical research and data processing.

The maps and interpolations, which may be generated from the data, may be used to find anomalous geochemistry patterns or indicator minerals for mineral exploration. The data may also be used for baseline environmental studies, such as determining natural geochemical background values.
